Helping a buddy of mine build a computer but his budget is much lower than anything I've worked with before, Looking to get the best bang for your buck. Hes decided on using Ubuntu so an OS is not needed, along with a mouse and keyboard. Monitor is needed, no required resolution really, but nothing too low. OC and SLI is not important, mainly using it for a couple games and daily activities (TF2, and wants to play BF3 on Low settings). Thanks in advance for any help.

*****I've been looking around for pre-builts and couldn't find anything really to an acceptable level for his budget, But if you know of a good pre-built please share!

Approximate Purchase Date: This Week

Budget Range: $450

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming is the main priority for him.

Parts Not Required: OS, Mouse, Keyboard

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: no preference, whatever I can get the best deal on, can split from multiple websites

Country: U.S.

Parts Preferences: Intel or AMD build, either or is fine

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: No

Monitor Resolution: 1280x1024

Thanks again for any help, greatly appricated.

Ubuntu is going to be a problem here. Last I tried the OS was incredibly slow on Sandy compared to WIndows.
Gaming is not going to be very practical either.

You can fit a pretty decent build in the $450 range (especially without an OS) if you wait for deals.
$15 Motherboard, $30 Antec NSK2480 PSU + Case, $44 CPU G630, and a $49.99 WD Drive.
Most of those deals have sailed, but they give you an idea.

That should work out well. Total with shipping is $486.71 before MiR...AND $446.71 AFTER! Not bad for all that. It's even expandable - and a 20" monitor at 1600x900 is respectable.

only reason why i opted in using promo codes, in my case, the hdd would be 5$ cheaper with promo, and the psu would be 15% cheaper.

wow, thank you guys for all the feedback, Inanation your build looks to be pretty good there, also it seems with there being a lot of issues for him, hes gonna pick up windows 7 and add that in as a seperate part of the budget.
I do notice though, why have an APU and a GPU? I ask because i honestly dont know why, so to me it just seems redundant.

Im gonna show him a good part of your build there Inanation, the system i had was very simmilar but i couldnt squeeze it down to less than 515 without sacrificing a lot. So thank you for your help with that.

Also I'm gonna show him this tonight since those codes will expire tomorrow, hopefully he can make a decision on what he wants to do.

The APUs perform much better when you Crossfire them with a low end card like the 6670.
Put simply the APU may not allow for high details at that resolution, but the added low end
video card will allow it to run much better.

Also, without the GPU, you'd have basically a 6450, I think. Not enough to play BF3...
