4670 1gb vs 512mb

Hey I was wondering weather the 512mb version of 4670 would outrun the 1gb??

I had a look at their specs and it turns out the 512 has more bandwidth.

The 512 i was looking at:

I read some forums about this already and they say that the 1gb was a waste??
I need to know which one i will benefit from in a 1680x1050 res

U wont benefit much from 1GB memory,the difference isn't much,go for the 512MB version

at that res more vram will help when using high AA in some games but not all

512MB would be more than enough if you don't plan to use SLI. With that resolution and a single 4670 card, by the time the VRAM is full by using AA and full quality settings, the GPU won't be able to cope anyway.

If you want to use SLI, the 1GB version will be preferable because the dual-GPU will cope with higher settings and might reach VRAM limits.

Also note that GTA IV loves VRAM, if you want to max view distance, you will need 1GB .

Unless the 1Gb card costs less, get the 512Mb version.
The extra 512Mb RAM will give you no performance gains unless you are gaming at 1920x1200 or higher (which you are not else you need to be getting a more powerful card).

Yeah I do play a lot of grunty games like GTA IV, Grid, Crysis and Farcry 2

Then i say reconsider your choice,for those games go for a HD 4830,how much is your budget ? and what resolution do u play at ?

yeah....thats my problem. Im limited at 400w max and the PSU is a cheapish one.

I play games at 1680x1050

A HD 4670 512MB(1GB isn't required for your resolution)can handle those games but don't expect to max them out.

What about playing FarCry2 at 1920x1080 on 512MB HD4850 with Ultra High settings? 1GB needed?

Yes but with 0xAA(You won't need it either because a resolution like that hardly has any jagged edges).
1GB may improve the performance in some areas but i don't think its needed since the 512MB version can handle it fine

FarCry2 features Physics(Is it nVidia's PhysX?).... 512MB is o.k to handle that also...

Bottom line is if the OP wants to run a card on his currant PSU which is 400 Watts, then with out knowing more about the system the only sensable option is a 4670.
The OP's PSU may have a 6 pin adaptor for PCIE cards in which case i would say go get a 4770.
But based on the info we have the 4670 512 is the better option and 1 GB really isnt needed unless Maximum detail/quality is esential.

The 512 MB cards have 1000 MHz GDDR3 and the 1 GB cards have 900 MHz DDR3, so the 512 MB is faster as long as you don't need the extra RAM.

With that PSU, I would not run anything over a 4670 or 9600GT.
Even then, you are probably pushing it.
That PSU is dangerous and needs to be upgraded to a higher quality unit.
When you can afford it, get a new 450w+ PCP&C, Corsair, Seasinic or Antec Earthwatts PSU.
Take second and look at how ultra budget PSU's perform Here, Here, Here and Here (if nothing else, the first link is quite humorous).

Looking through the list of available GPUs and assuming you are on a budget, I would recommend the following cards to you.
Without upgrading the PSU, either get the 4670 512Mb card or this somewhat faster 9600GT 512Mb for about $14 more.
If you upgrade the PSU first, you can get this much faster 9800GT 512Mb for about $150.

I totally agree with outlw6669, your PSU really needs updating, in my view regardless of what card you want to run.
If its a budget thing then just get a 512 4670. If you can stretch to a new PSU and a card get a 4770 or 4850 from ATI or as suggested something along the 9800 lines from Nvidia
