I currently have an i5 4670k @ 3.4ghz. I'm thinking of upgrading my graphics card to a GTX 1080 however I want to know if it will reach its full potential with my current CPU. I thought I should probably overclock my CPU but I'm a bit of a noob in that area and I'm having some temperature issues.

I guess what I really want to know is: is it worth upgrading from my R9 280x to the GTX 1080 with my current CPU? Will I see a significant performance improvement in games?

Cheers

Are you saying I'll be fine on 1080p? but 4k and my CPU will struggle?[/quotemsg]

Yes that is what he was saying, High fps on 1080p but there will be a bottleneck on 4k

[quotemsg=19881397,0,2298539]Your CPU will bottleneck the 1080 by alot and you would need a i7 for there to be no bottleneck, so no, you wont see a performance difference.[/quotemsg]

Hi, thanks for the quick response. Do you think if I were able to overclock my CPU (Some have gotten my model to 4.4ghz) then the bottleneck would not be an issue?

[quotemsg=19881414,0,1980730]depends. What resolution do you play at?
[/quotemsg]

1920x1080 @144hz

Main games are Overwatch, Rocket League and PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds.
Overwatch and Rocket League are normally 120fps+ and PUBG fluctuates between 40-80
Overwatch and PUBG are mostly low graphics settings.

Thanks for the info everyone. I might give it a go with overclocking my CPU and if I find it is bottlenecking then I'll look at upgrading my entire rig. It is almost 4 years old after all!

Cheers
