im pairing with a z87 mobo and a gtx1060 for a cheap gaming pc.

which would be the better cpu?

the 4690 has better performce out the box but will the overclocked 4670k be worth the extra money?

4670k is $78
4690 is $62

No. No such thing as a 6790k, so pretty sure part of that is a typo, but could be a 6700k or 4790k I'm guessing. The second would be good, the first doesn't fit the platform. A Z87 mobo is lga1150, requires a lga1150 cpu. The 6th gen Intel is lga1151 (first gen), doesn't fit.

Same with the i7-2600k/2700k, those are 2nd Gen, lga1155 cpus. Not lga1150.

I'd honestly recommend saving a little more until the i7 fits into the budget. Like stated above any of the 4c i5 are going to give you issues in a lot of games.

While the 4690k may be the better option, and may net playable results. Itll still struggle, be less than smooth and have possible stuttering issues.

Can run either on a decent 550w psu all day long. The 1060 will run on a 450w, but if looking at OC, a 550w would be a better option.

Ran my i7-3770K @ 4.9GHz and gtx970 @ 124%OC for 6 years on Evga G2 550w, and it's still running a year later. No worries. Gtx970/980 same thing basically.

You'd need a 980ti + OC to consider a 650w. I don't recommend anything at 500/600w, they aren't that good quality mostly.

Depends on the card. The 1060-6Gb/980 go head to head, some games the 1060 does 5fps± better, some games the 980 does 5fps± better, so overall the same thing. I'd take a 980 over a 1060-3Gb if prices are equitable, or the 1060-3Gb if there's a decent price difference, but given the choice, it's moot with a 980/1060-6Gb, whichever is cheaper, or if one is used and other new etc.

Damn you are lucky with that 3770k :D I have the same cpu on gigabyte z77 motherboard, and cant get past 4.3. Even 4.3 is no for me so I set it at 4.2 cuz going from 4.2 to 4.3 not worth the heat and voltage increase for such a low gain. I guess I didnt won silicone lottery.

Tried every possible option in BIOS, nothing, and temp isn't an issue.
