I have 2 cpus available right now, the i7 3770 and the 15 6400. Would either cpu be a descent upgrade from the 4690s? I currently have a GTX 1080

None of which are compatible with your motherboard?

Depends on the workload really but, on the basis that you'd have to buy a new motherboard anyway, then the Ryzen5 1600/1600X is where I would look - there's not many situations where it would be less viable than anything else on your list.

However, if you could find a cheap(ish) used i7-4770K or 4790K, that might be worth considering

Nobody can say with 100% certainty... and your GPU will play a larger part in the equation here (and a 1080 is more than capable) but yes, I would fully expect a Ryzen 5 1600/1600X/2600/2600X to be more than viable for 1080p gaming for the next 3 years.

For stock operation of a 6c/12t CPU, any B350 (for 1600 or 1600X) or B450 (for any of the chips) will be fine.
There's further consideration required for the 8c/16t chips for their power delivery requirements but, for a Ryzen5, you don't have to worry as much

what about overclocking, what would be an ideal board for overclocking?

Honestly, between PBO/XFR (auto-boost/overclocking), there's not much overclocking to be had on the Ryzen chips.

If you wanted to keep your options open for future upgrades and overclocking (as the AM4 socket will be supported through 2020), then I'd look to the higher end chipset boards; X470.
Given you're aiming for a CPU that will last 3 years+ though, I assume you're not looking at too much of a future upgrade path - in that case, any B450 would suffice.

what about boards that will support the new Ryzens comping out? Is there anything out at the moment that will have future upgrade proof?
