I'm looking at cpus for my bros computer and I'm wonder if it's better to get an 4770k or 4770? I know the 4770k is better but I want to know if you overclock it how much better fps in games you'd get. thanks.

Solution
if you can afford it get the K as you'll be able to o/c 25-30% in the future, but you pay more for it and a Z87 mobo.

If you don't get the K, don't get the I7 either! Get the Xeon E3-1230-V3, which is $100 cheaper and only lacks the onboard GPU which is not needed if you're using a discrete GPU.

Another factor might be how long that PC may last.
Consider the small gains from the 2600K - 3770K - 4770K.

In 2017 you bro might think: "dam this CPU is still strong, glad it's a K. I think I'll overclock".

You're already 9/10 the way there. Might as well get a K version for that extra power boost down the line. FPS will largely be more reliant on your GPU anyway. Processors usually don't weigh all that much to the overall FPS of a game. Maybe 0-10 FPS difference between a 4770K and a mid to high level i5?

I had a i7 4770 and upgraded it for K.
I do alot of video editing and video converting , so every little bit of processing power matters.

Running at 4.2ghz from 3.9ghz is not huge but is a difference.

impossible to answer. Most games currently place very little demand on the CPU, most are GPU limited. Titanfall uses just 2-3 cores @ 20% on 3 monitors @ max settings!!
Games with very heavy physics like BF4, place much more demand on the CPU, however according to benchmarks,

even with a very powerful GPU allowing nearly 100fps, there's still nothing to gain above a stock I5-3470.

Is the xeon the exact same as the i7 4770 but only lacks the gpu?

Hmm so you can sue them for gaming?

Also one more thing can you use aftermarket cpu coolers for it?

yep, exactly the same as I5 or I7, although you probably don't need one as it's only 69W. I just use an Evo because I had it already, but I'm thinking of putting the original cooler on so save space/weight on the mobo. Check your mobo supports the E3, most do.
