478 socket nothing on screen

I have an Abit IS-10 MB. I believe I ruined the 478 socket cpu, when I boot up for about 15 seconds without the heatsink. After that, nothing on the screen. I have been trying for about a week to get something going. One time, I unplugged the computer from the wall, and I pushed the power button on for about 30 seconds. When I booted up, I did get the familiar Intel 4 logo and then it give me the option to hit the delete key to go into Bios or the F-1 key to continue.

I tried both but the screen seemed to be frozen. The next day it was the same as before, nothing on the screen. I have ordered a cpu and heatsink to go with it. I hope the Motherboard is not damaged. Does anyone know if it would damage the MB? I would appreciate any thoughts on this problem.

I would look for another board on ebay or check pricewatch or computer geeks if you live in the states. Get a board with the same chipset. Abit is out of business, but don't be afraid to use another brand. With the same board chipset, you may avoid a hardrive format and be able to install the motherboard cd drivers and save your old files. Your power supply may have also failed, if you want to try another one. I usually change the ps out with a motherboard change if the previous board failed.

You're probally right, to get something new, but I have a sentimental reason for getting this one repaired. It is a gaming computer of which, I'm not into at all, but my grandson had it and it kept getting to hot and shutting down. I killed the cpu on it, but I have another one on order. I might be looking to buy a mb for it also.

I hope the mb is ok, but the fun of it is fixing it. I you have any ideas I'd be glad to hear from you.

Plus the Pentium 4 is the last of the true Windows 98 runners The games back then were just so playable

Oldie, I ordered a heatsink and a CPU, but did not know if the motherboard was good or not and If I installed the CPU on the Motherboard and ruined the CPU, then that would be more trouble and expense. So I took it to a shop and they installed a Biostar 478 socket mb and a new video card. The heatsink and CPU I ordered worked fine. The power supply was ok. So I basically done what you suggested and the computer works just fine. I think my grandson will be pleased as it is his birthday.

Thank you for taking the time to respond with great advice. I am learning the different types of Mb's and sockets. It a hobby for me, for I am an old man also (76). It keeps me occupied and I thoroughly enjoy it.
