4790k Crashing During CPU Intensive Tasks

Hello Everyone,

I have a high end PC build and it runs very well.
Most games I get 144fps on 1440p high settings.
However, whenever I try to render videos that I have recorded and whenever I try to livestream to Twitch.tv using OBS, my PC crashes.

I don't exactly know why this is but I have narrowed it down to the CPU.
My PC only crashes when I'm doing CPU intensive tasks, like rendering and streaming.
It crashes when I stream Black Ops 3, but never when I stream my desktop, and I assume this is because streaming my desktop only requires 40% of my CPU but streaming Black Ops requires >50% (for the game) and 40% for streaming.

And herein lies the problem, as I have not overclocked my CPU whatsoever, I reset my BIOS (something I found here was that my stock 4790K voltage was 1.056V, which seems pretty low compared to what other people on the internet have) and tried again and it didn't work, and I have monitored my temperatures for all of my parts and ,y top graphics card is the hottest component at like 79º under very heavy load.
CPU has never gone more than 54º.
I have an i7-4790K with an H100i cooler and SP120 fans, 2 Galax GTX 980 SOCs, and 16 gigs (4 sticks) of DDR3-1866 Corsair Dominator Platinum RAM. I have a 1000w BeQuiet PSU, and an ASUS Z97-Pro Wi-Fi AC Motherboard.

One thing I haven't done is update my BIOS, as I thought I had the latest update.
I will try that but I'm not sure it will fix anything.
For more information, the PC crashes in a two ways:
1. There is a BSOD that says "your PC ran into an error and needs to restart...." and at the bottom it says "WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR" which I found out usually means some kind of issue with the hardware. Every one of my components is working fine, but I am not sure about my CPU.
2. I am playing a game and a certain sound (such as the shooting of a gun) keeps repeating REALLY loudly and REALLY quickly, and everything freezes (my keyboard lights freeze, my mouse lights freeze [both of these are spectrum rainbow pulsating] and there is a constant image of the last thing I did in the game just being displayed. And then my PC either stays like that for a while and I just reset it or it automatically restarts.

So I have no idea what exactly the issue is. I would really appreciate some help, and I'll be very grateful to anyone who gives me assistance in solving this problem.

Thank You,

Solution
looks like the old drivers are stil installed or I am looking at the old memory dump.
(looks like the dump was dated today, so I guess the old driver are still installed)
--------
bugcheck ox124 is not caused by the RAM sticks in the machine. When parameter 1 = 0 it means the CPU called the Bugcheck directly most of the time it is the memory controller complaining about a error in the CACHE ram inside the CPU. in this case it was a error return from the CPU internal memory controller but a error that most offen happens if the voltages are wrong or the CPU was overheated. (see below)

this bugcheck is common when the system is overheating or overclocked or you have bad drivers that are incorrectly tweaking the hardware settings.
boot...
by default windows will save the memory dump files at
c:\windows\minidump with a file extention of .dmp

you would just copy these files to your cloud account (something like microsoft onedrive, or google docs, or mediafire) share them for public access, then post a link to the files.

Alright, I just found the folder.
I have only one Mini Dump file, but it is from the day of the crash.
I have posted it online on OneDrive.
Here is the link.

For some reason the entire link is not clickable, maybe due to the way Tom's Hardware separates links from regular text, and therefore it will probably only work if you copy and paste the entire link contained in the quotation marks but not including the quotation marks.
I hope you or someone else can make something out of this...

Thank You,

go to https://www.asus.com/support/Download/1/45/6/5/O9LgbQvMolVn73h7/45/

install the BIOS update, all of the windows 10 drivers and uninstall the old asus utilities you have installed and install the current versions if you want them.

uninstall the old asus overclocking driver IOMap64.sys, it is the most likely cause of this bugcheck for your machine. It is a old version and will be providing incorrect voltages and clock rates to your i7-4790K

you might consider removing the ScpVBus.sys
Scarlet.Crush Productions Scp Dual Shock 3 Virtual Bus Driver
I think it has a bug where it can corrupt system data and cause bugchecks.

the old version of the applecharger driver has bugs and also tends to corrupt memory. it is used to override the max current that a USB port can provide.
so you can charge apple products faster on a PC . I would remove it if you don't charge apple products via usb. if you do, un install the old version and install the updated one.

-------------
CPU called the bugcheck because of a internal time error on proc 0 memory bank 4
IE cpu core 0 trying to access cache memory did not work.

your system was up for 3 mins and 10 seconds

you have some old drivers installed:

Alright!
So I just uninstall all the old ASUS drivers/BIOS drivers and get all new ones?
The DS3 SCP Virtual Bus Driver is buggy and does cause some problems, will get rid of that.
I don't have any apple products other than my MacBook Air, so I don't need the charger driver.

I'll make sure to try this either today or tomorrow.
Thank you so much for your help and your very quick replies!
I really appreciate it!
(I'll make you best solution once I've tried this)

Hey,

I tried that solution. I uninstalled all ASUS drivers and installed new ones.
I didn't bother installing ASUS utilities because I didn't use them anyway.
I have a brand new BIOS version, 2702, that I installed the other day.
It still crashed.
A new .dmp file has not been created though, not sure why.
I'm not getting a blue screen any more, just a loud repeating sound (gunshot because I'm playing Black Ops 3) and it keeps repeating until I restart myself.
Sometimes it completely freezes without any sound and doesn't do anything until I restart.
So I think I've fixed the BSOD issue now I just have to figure out why it's crashing.
It is 100% CPU because when I play Black Ops my CPU usage is like 40% and it never crashes.
When I start to stream, however, CPU usage is 100% and then it crashes within 2 minutes.
It's not overheating. I have an H100i and my temps are never above 50C (at 100% usage).

check for motherboard audio drivers updates. Often the motherboard audio drivers can conflict with the video graphics cards sound drivers. (if you don't get audio from your video card cable directly to your monitor speakers, you can disable the support in windows device manager control panel)
\ScpVBus.sys has bugs in it that cause corruption of other drivers data but you will tend to get different drivers bugchecking on each boot of the system.

There's no issue with the sound.
All audio drivers have been uninstalled and updated.
As have all the other drivers on my machine.
Clearly it can't be a driver issue, I even updated my motherboard BIOS.

So, I don't know what's happening because my PC still crashes if I try to stream.
It has to be some kind of voltage issue.
Not power supply, because my power supply is brand new and very high quality and I know it for sure 100% works perfectly.
I think my CPU is not getting enough voltage, and someone said something about an ASUS auto-overclock, which I don't know much about or how to disable it.
Any ideas for a voltage fix or a way to test if my CPU is receiving the correct voltage?

Hey John,

I've not been able to figure out what's going on.
I've regenerated a new bugcheck by forcing the crash (by doing what caused my PC to crash last time)
Maybe this new report is better or something like that, as it is made after all drivers have been updated.

It is attached to my OneDrive, here is the link:
https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=933EE0F69542B306!3401&authkey=!AExkj9JRE9T5h2E&ithint=file%2cdmp
I hope you can make sense of this one and I hope it helps us resolve this issue that has been plaguing me for a long time now.

I want to stream and render!!!

Thank You,

Edit:
I've now downloaded Prime95 and acquired lots more information.
I started it up and my entire PC crashed within 5 SECONDS after I started the blend test.
I looked it up and people said it was a RAM issue, so I went to the BIOS and reduced the memory clock from 1866MHz to 1333MHz, which uses less power.
Turned on my PC and ran Prime95 again, this time my PC survived for about 2 minutes until it crashed.
I thought I had found something, and I ran the Small FFT Test, which claimed it stressed the CPU but not the RAM as much.
That ran for almost 10 minutes, and didn't even crash. I force stopped it and there were no issues with that test.

So, there must be some kind of RAM issue.
I have 4 sticks of 4gb each Corsair Dominator Platinum 1866MHz.
I experienced problems with them before, when I first download the Black Ops 3 Beta (I had only 2 sticks at that time, so 8gb of RAM), I was able to open it but the game was 100% UNPLAYABLE. Literally couldn't click anything before my PC started lagging like crazy and eventually crashed.
I fixed that issue by just buying 2 more sticks of RAM, with a total of 16gb I was able to run the game without any issues.
So now, I have come to the conclusion there must be SOMETHING wrong with the RAM.

I have no idea what it is, voltage, clocks, temperatures, something else, I have no idea.
Do you have any idea what could be going on??
Should I start a new thread?

looks like the old drivers are stil installed or I am looking at the old memory dump.

boot into bios, reset the bios to defaults, boot into windows and update your very old asus drivers (old drivers tweak the voltages incorrectly)

AsIO.sys Wed Aug 22 02:54:47 2012
AsUpIO.sys Mon Aug 02 19:47:59 2010

install updated versions from the vendor website
https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z97PRO/HelpDesk_Download/
looks like the updated versions are dated in 2015.

you also have ScpVBus.sys Sun May 05 14:31:26 2013 installed but it tends to corrupt kernel memory and causes various crashes.
(not the cause of the bugcheck 0x124 in this case)

(something tweaked on your BIOS settings as indicated by the non standard clock rates)

bugcheck 0x124

Alright, how would I uninstall the AsIO drivers and the old drivers?
I updated and default-ed my BIOS, and I can tell you are looking at the correct minidump because it says BIOS version 2702 (newest version) which I updated to after you told me to.
The only thing I have changed in the BIOS is the CPU Fan Notifier thing that beeps when it doesn't detect a CPU fan is plugged into the motherboard. I turned it off because it wouldn't let me turn on my PC and I know I have a working H100i.
Other than that MB is default everything.
RAM is XMP, and here is some more info:

Prime 95 Tests: (Note all the following crashes are WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERRORs, 0x124)
1. 4x4gb (2 different packs) 1866MHz, CPU normal, Blend Test, INSTANT Crash.
2. 4x4gb (2 different packs) 1333MHz, CPU normal, Blend Test, Crash after 2 minutes.
3. 4x4gb (2 different packs) 1333MHz, CPU normal, Small FFT Test, 10 minutes no crash, I force stopped it to test more.
4. 2x4gb (All sticks from same pack -- Pack 1) 1866MHz, CPU normal, Blend Test, Crash after 2 minutes.
5. 2x4gb (All sticks from same pack -- Pack 2) 1866MHz, CPU normal, Blend Test, Crash after 2 minutes.
Maybe there's a RAM voltage issue? I can't find where the DRAM voltage adjustment is in my BIOS, I'll try to find it tomorrow.

But anyway, any idea how to install those AsIO.sys and AsUpIo.sys drivers?

Hello everyone,

I believe I have resolved this issue.
I was about to send a replacement request to Intel asking them to fulfill my warranty, and they asked for the FPO and ATPO numbers located on my CPU.
I took off the H100i Cooler exposing the CPU, and what do I find?
A HORRENDOUS application of the cooler. When I installed it, I did not apply the thermal paste correctly and I did not screw in one side of the cooler in all the way.
I removed the cooler and applied brand new and fresh Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound.
What do I find out? I try to replicate the process which caused the issue most frequently and most reliably (streaming Black Ops 3 on OBS) and I was able to stream an entire Demolition match of Black Ops 3.

So far, I believe I have fixed this problem.
Anyone who has a similar issue should try and remove their cooler and see if it applied properly.
Otherwise, delete any programs that may be causing a crash and Default and Update your BIOS.

I hope this helped everyone, and thank you to johnbl for spending so much time and effort into helping me resolve the problem.
