4790K running too hot

I have received my brand new 4790K last week and finally got around to install everything this weekend.

So far I have installed the stock cooler, since I am waiting for the custom loop parts to arrive.

While I get below 40°C idle temperatures (which seems normal for stock cooling). When running AIDA64 and Prime95 my core temperatures reach 100°C celsius in a matter of seconds after which thermal throttling kicks in.

My stock cooler is firmly mounted, also tried to remount it, but to no avail. Just ordered Artic Silver thermal paste to reapply it, but seems like an RMA case to me, or do you have any other suggestions what I could try?

Nothing heats a cpu like prime95. I've experienced those temps on every Intel cpu I've owned with the stock cooler for the last 4 generations. The stock cooler is just that bad under those circumstances.

Sorry I should correct myself. Every I5 and I7* . the I3 s I've played with always managed to stay below 80C on prime95 with the stock cooler

I had the same experience, so I upgraded to a cooler master for about $25. Way better.

this is my temp .. hope it help

I have 212 Evo + 4790K ... this is what i notice
your Vcore is what driving the temp. my OC to 4.4 only ( AsRock auto tune on advance setting only)

V = 1.176 = 30-34 C degree - Idle
V = 1.225 = 62-75 C .. but once i a while will go to 81C ( full load AIDA , OCCT , HyperPI stress test)

when i have my

V=1.09 temp only 25C
V = 1.25 ... the temp shot up to 90 .. average be 68-81

i hope this help on figure out your temp.

quick note**
I had 2 fan and 1 fan set up .... i see maybe 1-2 temp different only.
also if your 2 fan 1 is faster or have different configuration .. then maybe it will created a turbulent with in the 2 fan ..

I would try just to run 1 fan stock to see there is a different
Also don't forget to go into Cmos to change your fan speed to Full

Try using RealBench for benchmarking/stressing. I had the same problem with the 4790k after switching from my 4.8 GHz / 1.42 V FX-8350. I had always heard that Intel chips ran cooler than the 8350, so I was surprised when my temps hit 90 C instantly in Prime 95 while using 4.4 GHz / 1.2 V OC. I reset my waterblock multiple times, but Prime was still melting the ice in my freezer. When I used RealBench at the same setting, temps never reached above 75 C. Now, I'm "gaming" stable at 4.7 GHz / 1.23 V with temps maxing out at ~86 C in the H.264 testing. I've run hours of Far Cry 3, Watch Dogs, AC Black Flag, and modded Skyrim, and my in-game temps never get above 65 C. I know a lot of people don't acknowledge an OC that doesn't survive several years of Prime 95, but I'm very happy with my setup. No BSODs and moderate, manageable temps.

- 2x120mm intake fans in front
- 1x120mm intake fan in bottom
- 1x120mm exhaust fan in rear
- 2x120mm exhaust fans (pull config) on water cooler radiator mounted on top
