4870x2 Fullscreen gives out of range or non preset mode error

Hi all,
Hoping someone here can help. I am having a problem with my Sapphire 4870x2 graphics card.

When I try to run any game in fullscreen mode it will play the trailer or a load screen but as soon as it switches to the game I get either an out of range or non-preset mode error.

If I can get a game into windowed mode it works fine if i switch it back to full screen out of range error.

I have changed the monitor, changed the DVI cable, replaced Vista 64 with Windows 7 64 no change to the problem

I have updated the MB bios, unloaded and reloaded CCC and the ATI drivers

no ideas?

at the moment the saphire 4870x2 is looking like a really bad expensive choice.

The AMD and Sapphire helpdesks were totally useless.

If I cant solve it i guess it is time to go back to Nvidia and take a hammer to the 4870x2 and never look at AMD/ATI again.
