I recently build new i7 computer (about 4 months ago) and it was running smooth, though i hardly used it.
Now that I have some time, I decided to install games such as cod4, et, wolfenstein, crysis, etc. What I noticed while playing et and cod4 is it drops fps from 125 to 20 every 15 or so seconds. I tried almost everything I could think of, reinstalling the game, using default game n bios cfg, n so on. Is there something wrong with the computer or did I screw up while assembling the parts?

system spec:
i7 920 - 2.66 ghz
ati radeon 4890 (gigabyte)
6 gb ocz platinum ddr3 (3x2gb)
vista x64 sp2 - home
GA-EX58-UD4P
corsair 750 watt
1x600gb sata2 wg

I would think the game should run smoothly on this rig.

thank you,
Raj

It could be that your system is getting to hot, that happens to my pc aswell so it could be that it is to hot maybe position it in a more spacious area to getter air flow. or add some more fans or type of cooling.

I tried a different graphic card, 4850 from a friend, and the problem was still there. When I turned on vsync and the fps stayed at 75 for a minute then started jumping around (avg 2-250 fps cod4 online tdm).

I ran some tests on 3dmark vantage on 4850 and here are the results:
CPU Score: 9915
Graphics Score: 8944
I'll try it out on 4890 when I get it back.

and I don't think heating is the problem. the room temp is below 20'c and I have the sniper case.
temps:
4850 - idl temp: 79'c at 27% fan speed (auto)
i7- temp ('c): 35, 31, 34, 30 (from real temp 3.0)
tj max: 65, 69, 66, 70

@kidd: idle temperature at 79 deg cel is kinda high. its probably going up to 90 or more on load. that might be the problem.

my 4890 (sapphire, stock cooler) which I have OC'ed plenty idles at 43, and on a 15min Furmark GPU stress does not cross 71 degrees.

I thought 80'c is normal for 4850 - the guy even called visiontek to make sure if its normal. also i forgot to mention for the 3dmark, it was done under 1280x768 resolution.
I'll def going to test furmark and 3dmark on my 4890.
