4890 OC card low 3dmark 06 score (10959 points)

******NEW CPU UPDATE*******
i purchased a Phenom II Black Edition X3 core @3.0 GHZ

score went from 10959 to 14060, and boosted the cards performance massively,
then overclocked (%7) i got 15024 POINTS!!!

even more boost from the card!! no more GTA 4 lag!!!!

thanks for the help guys, this card really needs good cpu!

Hi guys, im really sad i just buy this 4890 hoping for a massive increase in score from my old asus 9800gt 512, but it gave very little improvement. Please if someone can give me some input, that would be greatly appreciated (only got 800 more overal points upgrade from the 9800GT 512MB)


10959 3DMarks (now 15000 from new cpu)

SM2.0 Score: 4610
HDR/SM3.0 Score: 5981
CPU Score: 2219

System: (MotherBoard : M2N-MX SE plus)

CPU: AMD 5200+ dual core (2700GHZ OC@ 2950GHZ) (now 3.0 ghz x3 core black phenom)
Graphics: Gigabyte ATI4890 1GB DDR3 OC edition
RAM: 2 GB
PSU: 500watt

Drivers : latest

even tho i get low scores heres the games i can play with highframes and smooth graphics

crysis - 1900x1000 HIGHEST (AAx8 AFx8)
DiRT - 1900x1000 maxed all
Left for dead - 1900x1000 maxed all
Grid - 1900x1000 HIGHEST maxed all
Cod 5 - 1900x1000 HIGHEST maxed all

GTA IV - runs like crap... CPU??

Your CPU is the reason for your low score but it's a moot point as when gaming you are actually 'using' your card as opposed to someone running at 1280 x 1024 or lower.

First of all the best way to know that your performance is better,is to check your FPS in games,and it seems u are getting better FPS so this means there is no problem here
3DMARK 06 isn't the best app to trust since u ran it in 1280x1024 too giving little room to your HD 4890 to show its true power.
Most games GPU limited and u are getting excellent performance in them,but some like RTS games or GTA IV(To be honest GTA IV isn't good optimized either) and that's why you don't see much of a boost in them,so don't worry check your FPS in games and if they are higher than before then you don't have any problems

the in-game performance is greatly increased, and was instantly noticeable,

will my cpu be effecting my gpu scores at all? or only cpu ?

^ it will affect gaming but it shouldn't effect GPU scores very much.

I have found that a fast CPU with lots of onboard cache seems to help in games but that's just my own experiences.

most games would run ok with a dual but a quad's are coming into their own with software an games but if you not looking that far a 720 would walk over most duals

for same price it seems as a dualcore i can get a lower quadcore.

I think the 720 Black Edition would do just as well as the low end quads and still save you a bit of money.

on "articles, shows a 9600gt 512 getting a better sm2.0 score than my 4890 OC LOL!!!!!

so if cpu wont really do much to my gpu scores, wheres the problem?

It's got to be a bottle neck with your CPU. It is the only reason I can possible think of. Bottle necking still affects your scores.

As long as your gaming is smooth you shouldn't worry, unless your into scores then go with the CPU and some more memory and that should help.

well with only 850 overal more points than my en9800gt 512mb card,
gave a massive change as i said in games,...


but eah cpu is nxt on the menu and will definatley post up results,
im wanting 14k-15k?? at least 10k-11k from card alone,

It is Your CPU, I also have a 4890 running at stock speeds with a 955BE at stock and got 14xxx, with the 955 running at 3.6 I got 17xxx, tonight im shooting for 4.0.

I have a E8400 C2D @ Stock 3.0Ghz and a GTX275 I pull a 14,700. SM3.0 Im at 8000 points The 6Mb L2 cache on the E8xxx series is nice.

He has and AMD rig and can buy a Phenom CPU without upgrading the motherboard,if he goes for Intel then both CPU and Motherboard must be replaced,IMO getting a good AMD CPU will do the job

5200 is a AM2 right? Get a Phenom II and you should see a large number jump most likely. Either the 720 BE or the 810 would be good.

just goes to show you how bad a bottleneck can get sometimes. If you get you a really good CPU cooler that black edition will overclock even further. On a very high end air cooler and some messing around with the vcore you should get around 3.8GHz stable.

That will really let that card have some breathing room and give you some more head room for overclocking the 4890 some more.

hehe guys guys, its good at the moment... and it was actualy 2.8 ghz standard , so 3.0 ghz is enough for me (profile %7)

and i just use the stock ati-overdrive overclock, thats enough!

but... stilll..... the urge to overclock,,,,, just doesnt....go....away

oh yeah and it only gets worse. I swear the first time I ever did a really solid overclock I was so addicted to the idea of simply seeing how far it could go that the next thing I knew I had the parts for a water cooling loop in front of me. And now all these years later I find myself wanting a $400 motherboard just to see if I can get a bit more on the next build.
