4930K Ivy Bridge-E or Haswell CPU for 4k Video Editing and Grading

I'd like to build my own PC based rig. Coming from a mac background I'm in no way an experienced builder. My main concern is performance, future expansion and stability editing 4k material. As a side note I'd love to have some thunderbolt capabilities but it seems like there aren't any MOBOS with this feature compatable with a x79 CPU.

If you can wait at all, wait for the haswell e chips that are bound to be released any time now. Otherwise: get the ivy bridge e, since 12 threads should provide noticably better performance on that kind of threaded workloads. Still you should consider that when doing 4k editing in professional programs like premiere pro, etc., you should get a professional grade gpu as well.

Haswell-e aren't coming out till the end of 2014. Ivy Bridge-E is you best choice for editing. I also have heard the EVGA X79 Dark MoBo is good board.

Since E's have no on-board GPU, you need a card. Pick AMD or NVidia which ever is support my more/most of your applications. Thing about a new R9 290X or GTX 780 class GPU for this level of system.

To encode 4K video I recommend the most powerful CPU you can afford.

If the i7-4960k is too rich for your blood, then the i7-4930k will have to do.

So I can bite the bullet and get the 4960k now, or wait for the for the Haswell E chip until the third quarter of 2014... I wonder if getting the 4930K at a lesser cost will offset any future investment on Haswell E chips with the extra 2 cores?

Seems like a I picked a great time to build my own rig, but I guess the next bigger and better thing is always around the corner.

The price jump from the 4930k to the 4960k is quite large for the extra MHz you get. It's called diminishing return, you have to spending a lot more money to eek out better performance. If you think the price difference is worth the extra performance then, go for it, because that is a personal decision.

If you can wait for Haswell-E then wait. I would say it ultimately depends on the circumstance for this PC build. If you are running a production studio then by all means big it now because in business, time is money. If this is more for personal / hobby use, then I would wait if you have the patience.

Yeah not sure if I can wait till the end of 2014 or the third quarter for that matter. Like I mentioned below, I picked kind of a bad time to build a rig. Thanks for the heads up on the MoBo - was looking for one with a Thunderbolt port but to no avail for the 2011's. I'll have to live without and take the more robust CPU over the large data transferring.

Extra performance is always welcome but unless it's going to blow my socks of, I'll probably go for the 4930K and since I'm building more of a work horse to land more 4k gigs I may not have the luxury to wait. It is what it is, I'm just hoping to build something with a decent lifespan, if that makes any sense.

You can get a PCI card for thunderbolt.

The 4930k should have a good lifespan as long as your expectations are not excessively high like being able to encode a 2 hour 4K video with near lossless video quality in less than 1 minute. That is an extreme example since you might have to wait a couple of centuries for that level of performance, but you get the point.

The other issue that something new is always coming out. Intel releases a new generation of CPUs every year. Each successive generation will be more powerful than the last. At some point in time you will simply have to make the decision to pull the trigger, therefore it is always a bad time to buy since there is always something new around the corner.

Since I will be running Adobe CS mainly I read I should probably go with NVdia, also thinking of running Avid Media Composer. So solid GPU is something I really have to look into. I know this isnt the GPU thread but any major differences between the GTX 780 and the GTX 780Ti?

Sure I get the point, I guess pulling the trigger is half the battle.
