4gb ram installed 256mb usable

Hello

I did have 2.5 usable but changed the settings msconfig to what I read somewhere would allow me to use the whole 4GB but not it's limited it to 256mb and won't allow me to change it back or any other setting using msconfig.

I don't have many files on the laptop so would it benefit from a full wipe?


I'm open to any help!


My laptop is a Toshiba L500-19x satellite if this helps

You have misunderstood the purpose of the "Maximum memory" setting in msconfig (or somebody has given you bad advice).
You only use that option when you want to limit the amount of installed RAM that's used.

32-bit Windows cannot use the full 4 GB of installed RAM, it can only use up to 3.2 GB, you cannot force it to use more.

Have you tried UNticking "Maximum memory" in msconfig, in (Advanced options under the BOOT tab), then click OK?
