My laptop is HP Pavillion dv4-2126tx. It came with a 2GB RAM(DDR3). It runs Win7 Ultimate 32bit.
I know that my OS supports only upto 4GB. So i fitted a single 4GB(DDR3) ram in socket#1. But my PC dint startup and showed MEMORY_MANAGEMENT BSOD. Then i tried fitting the old 2GB stick additionally in socket#2 along with the new 4GB stick in socket#1. Now, PC starts showing 6GB memory of which 2.93GB usable, which is good. But I want to know why Im unable to run with only the 4GB stick installed.

Solution
Win 32 won't run more than 4gb. Mixed ram modules mostly don't work.

Looks like that 4gb module is faulty or put in the wrong slot. Use memtest 86 to test it. Check your motherboard manual.

But the manufacturer states that my PC can handle upto 8GB RAM(there are only 2 sockets) hence it must accept atleast 4GB RAM... And also the 4GB is working along with the combination of 2GB. But not working if installed solo.
