Built a new PC recently, have a Ryzen 7700x paired with an AMD 7900xtx. Looking to upgrade my decade-old Asus WUXGA monitor to something 4k. I don't want anything curved or ultra wide, and I'm not really interested in OLED ( I do like the Samsung QLED TV I have) - and I'm not sure what things are important for gaming. Local dimming? Latency? Not doing anything competitive, playing mostly 1P games (although my son and I play a few sports games together local co-op).

Any recommendations or guidance would be appreciated.

OLED is far and away the best for playing video games, but you already mentioned you don't play anything particularly competitive. Especially if you are looking to play games with your son, a monitor with an IPS panel for wider viewing angles and better color reproduction is something to consider. The other thing to consider is how much you are willing to spend. 4K displays have dramatically reduced in price, but can still be fairly expensive when kitted with features like higher refresh rates and fast response times. If you could list a budget that would be great.

If you are looking for somewhere to start for under 500 dollars, the Gigabyte M27U is a great 4K monitor for the price. The pixel response time is a little sloppy when compared to higher end monitors, but it has a high refresh rate, features an IPS panel for wide viewing angles, and has solid motion clarity. Hope this helped, take care.

Probably want to spend ~$700 and change or less. My two concerns with OLED are screen burn-in and brightness, as this desktop is the family desktop and is used for other things besides games...

Basically I want to be able to get a really good picture for both games and standard use, and something that will last...

Apologies for not answering your other questions in my original post. For gaming, what you are looking for is high refresh rate and low response times. A monitor with a high refresh rate increases the number of times the screen is able to update its image or frame, meaning fast motion in things like video games will appear smoother. Low response times are important for keeping games feeling responsive and consistent. A monitor with low response times can leave trails behind on fast moving objects like a cursor, showing parts of the previous image mixed with the current one.

If you have concerns with OLED, I would recommend the LG UltraGear 4K. It has a high refresh rate of 144Hz, low input lag, very fast response times, and it's an IPS panel for wider viewing angles, accurate colors, and a brighter image. It has some other nice benefits like HDMI 2.1 if you ever decide to hook up a game console or other HDMI 2.1 source. If you are doing other things besides games, the monitor has HDR 400 certification for entry level HDR reproduction, and is 32 inches for some extra screen real estate. If you aren't looking for OLED but you still want a great 4K gaming experience, this is the monitor for you. Hope this helped, take care.
