Hello Everyone. I am building a new gaming rig. I currently run a 780 classified. Is it worth upgrading to a 980? It doesn't look like the performance increase is that significant from the 780. i was thinking about picking up another 780 (price dropped) and just running SLI for about $280. My only concern is running everything on a 4k monitor. I mainly run Battlefield 4, Metro, etc. Power usage is not an issue.
Basically 780 sli or 980 for 4k?

Thanks!

the 2304 core 780s at 1300mhz will beat the pants off a 780ti and probably match the 980, if were talking reference speeds. 780@1300 is roughly equal to a 780ti@1100mhz. i haven taken the time to compare the gm204 to gk110.

if you have the power supply to handle it, just get another classy. the performance differences between a 780 and 970 are negligible especially if you consider an overclock.

Truth be told I'm in the EXACT same dilemma. Both the 780 SLI and the 980 should perform very similarly. And the most recent nvidia update added 4k drivers for the 780 and other GTX series. The SLI is cheaper but it will never be as stable as a single GPU, so its about money really.

You are looking at about a ~30% increase in power over a 780.

$280 is a good deal, though. You can SLI and OC the Classified's to 780 Ti (about 970) levels or above if you have two good cards.

I was faced with the same conundrum, and ended up opting for the 980 SLI solution (actually just arrived a couple hours ago). Sold my 780ti Classy to a colleague to offset the price of two new cards so realistically the investment was worthwhile.

One reason why I went with this was the support for HDMI 2.0 with supports 4k60fps. The 780 does not support HDMI 2.0, so you will need to use DP if you want to go over 30fps (displayed, obviously) but then you will have to contend with the quirks that go along with MST while displaying 4k.

I would say if you can sell your current card, go with a pair of 980s. Otherwise just just grab yourself another Classy if the connectivity thing isn't a primary concern for you.

EDIT:

And also this. :)

Will a 760w Bronze power supply be enough for SLI on 2 gtx 780's?
