4k downsampling to 1440p

I was wondering how well it would work if I was to get a 4k monitor and then set it to 1440p while gaming?

With a gtx 970 not being able to run 4k smoothly and it being better suited to 1440p, how well would this work out? All the 1440p monitors are priced around the same as a 4k and since the direction of the monitor market seems to be skipping right to 4k, i figured i would just get a 4k monitor and then when the time comes, just add another 970 for full 4k

Most monitors work much better in native resolution. Else you can have problems eg icons and writing wrong size.

well the only thing i would be downsampling on would for gaming, all other times it would stay at the native 4k

Try it and see. From what I've heard here there's always problems. How do you change the resolution while gaming? I think you need to be in Windows.

oh really? that was partially the question, whether it could even be done or not. i suppose i'll keep looking around and see if i can find anything else on it as time goes on
