4k Monitor keeps crashing at 60Hz

Hello!

I used to run a 4x 1080p monitor setup since i require a large working area. But after moving to another country i decided to buy an Asus PB287Q 4k monitor instead of 3x 1080p monitors.

Unfortunately there has been an issue that has arisen and I am not quite sure what to do about it.

Every time I put the 4k monitor into 60hz my graphics card starts crashing continuously which is quite frustrating to say the very least. The screen turns black for 3-4 seconds and after that I get the classic error that says that the "AMD display driver have stopped working and has recovered" and I have no idea what is causing it and I was hoping that someone here could help shed some light on the issue. The monitor runs just fine once i put it back to 30hz without any crashes or tearing.

I am currently running a Radeon XFX 7950 Ghost and I am wondering if it's powerful enough since it does have a few years on it's back. But as I mentioned before I have managed to run 4x 1080p monitors at 60 and 120 hz without any issues at all. The rest of my computers components are also a few years old (about 3-6 years for each component) so prehaps it's something else that cant keep up?

Apart from the much smoother experience that 60hz gives there is no other difference in performance regardless of running the monitor in either 60 or 30 hz. The temperature on the card is about the same (around 55C idle and 75C when working) and I am getting around the same FPS in video games. I really could see myself just using the monitor at 30 hz if it was not for the fact that it's almost impossible to draw with that refresh rate since i require immediate and precise feedback that 30 hz simply cant provide.

Other information that I think would be useful is that I have a 750W power-supply, the monitor is connected to a mini display port rather then a normal, nothing happens to the other monitor that is also plugged in when the 4k monitor crashes, I have of course tried to update drivers and I am running display port 1.2

So does anyone have any clue as to why my monitor keeps crashing as soon as I put it at 60 hz? If there's any other information you might require to dig deeper into the problem i would love to provide it.

And if it's the case that a XFX 7950 Ghost simply does not have the juice required to run a 4k Monitor at 60 hz I would very much appreciate if I could receive some suggestions for upgrading my card, I do have quite the tight budget though and I want to spend no more then 250$ on a new graphics card so I hope that is enough.

Thank you very much.

That card apparently runs a Display Port 1.2 version, which should be fast enough for 4K at 60hz. Something you might think about checking is the cable. Might be an easy solution before trying a new card.

This also might be a driver problem, in which case I'd suggest contacting AMD directly and see if they're aware of the problem and might have a fix.

Hello Noahhicks! Thank you very much! I am relieved that my card does support 4k at 60hz at least.

The cable I am using did not come with the monitor itself since my card only supports mini display ports being connected to it so I had to go out and buy one so indeed that might be the culprit.

I did find some text on the cable that I hope you might find useful. It says "Displayport cable E119932-U RJ AWM style 20226 80c 30v vw-1 copartner" but sadly i have thrown away the original packaging so I cant look at that.

Thank you once again

Edit: I did find the cable that came originally with my monitor and it had roughly the same text apart from the different cable ID and company.

I also found this website page http://www.displayport.org/cables/how-to-choose-a-displayport-cable-and-not-get-a-bad-one/ that I looked through and I did not find my current display port cable on that list.

Once I am able to I am going to try and go to the store and buy a new cable and see if it improves things. Thanks once again!
