4K monitor laptop

I have a 1080p laptop with pretty decent components(gtx 960, i7-6700, 16g ram) but the screen is only 1080p. I'm wondering if I buy a 4K monitor will my laptop input 4K into the monitor(like a setting) or will it just input 1080p

If it has a DisplayPort or HDMI 2.0 connector available it can output 4K, but you can't really game at 4K with a GTX 960 (if gaming is the intended use).

I have a hdmi 2.0 amped personally I'm not that big of a gamer, I'll probably play in 1080p high settings or 2K low settings. I'm just wondering if it's capable. Thxs btw

Yeah either HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort will allow you to use the monitor at its native 4K resolution.
