4K small form factor home build?

I've used home theater PC's since the latter part of the 90's when I had my first big Mitsubishi HDTV and needed somehow to upscale non HD since at that point, cable providers had no HD availability and such.

I've gone through the Windows Media Center years, and have a lot of things that I had recorded while I had media center, as well as my own rips and other downloads.

I had an Alienware X51 that I had tossed when it went bad, and replaced with a very wonderful tiny form factor HP Pavilion (the little windows version of their streaming box). But that didn't do well with newer versions of windows...

I'm currently using an Intel NUC, the 7th gen i5 model from last year, NUC7i5BNK. I've got just 8 GB of memory in it since this is just a media center PC, I don't surf the web, use any programs, or even stream with this - straight files off my Synology NAS, and my Logitech home security program is all that runs on here. I don't even bother with the Plex and such anymore, I've found my life is much simpler simply having shortcuts to folders on the NAS and going to movies, TV shows, videos, etc...

But this NUC is being a bit of a pain, even after a total nuke and rebuild a month or two ago using more current drivers. It just struggles on some of the 4k content, and I even have issues with sound dropping randomly for a second or so on other 1080 or even SD content.

I usually use MPC-HC or VLC to play back my videos (since they both bitstream and I have an Atmos Sony STR-DN1080 receiver with atmos speakers).

I'm ready to just get something better designed, but since I don't use this for gaming (I have many consoles for that as well as an Oculus PC system) I am having some issues trying to find what would be a good setup.

I reached the point of simply figuring to keep it simple, I'd grab an Alienware Alpha R2. I had held off on one since they were still 6th gen processors and I had hoped they'd refresh. But I see now they're discontinued...

I want something small that I can keep up by the TV like my little NUC is, between my cable box and my XB1X. I even looked at the newer Hades Canyon NUC but that seems to have its own issues with 4k playback.

I don't mind building my own - built my first own PC back around '92, so it's nothing new. I just can't seem to find something that isn't excessive for the cost for my needs. I don't want to spend money to build a gaming system, just something to play back video files.

Anyone have any good suggestions for a small form factor case? I've had trouble finding something that would be small enough to work in my location, but still have enough room for some low profile graphics card.

I won't need it for blu ray or ANY disc playback - I use my XB1X for that as it supports all the 4k HDR and Atmos bitstreaming. So I won't need or want a disc of any sort on it.

And would I be better off with a small graphics card, even if just a low end AMD one? Or will the 8th gen Intel processors do better than the 7th gen has?

I'll ultimately want a board that supports two M2 drives, since I have one smaller 256GB one, and a newer WD 1 TB NVME Drive (WDS100T2X0C). So while I'll need to get all the other components, I won't need any drives.

I'm assuming I'd likely end up needing new RAM. So if I can manage everything else I'd need at $800 or under, I'd be a happy camper.

I could always redo my cabinet, and if I ended up with a case that was at least not any larger than an Xbox 1 S or X, I'd be able to redo things to fit it elsewhere... Just wouldn't be my first choice, although I know it may make my goal more realistic since I know that you pay a premium for small...

If anyone has any good suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I built a nice little HTPC for my parents and I used a streacom case with a Pico PSU. It is a really nice looking case that is not much bigger than a NUC. Pair it with a mITX board and a CPU and you will be in business. Any Intel CPU would do for playback, but I would probably look at the the AMD 2200g/2400g APUs as they have much better integrated graphics than Intel's current offering.

Here is the case from Streacom

Here is the Pico PSU:

PCpartpicker wont have a Pico PSU and does not have the pricing for the Streacom case. But this is everything without the PSU and Case and those parts should be less than $200 combined.

I went with a more expensive motherboard because it wont require a bios update for the 2400g and has better RAM compatibility. You could save some money by going with a B350 board. Or if you wait a few weeks, the b450 boards will be release really soon and should be cheaper than the x470,

Thanks. I had noted the lack of the M2 on the first option as well. And the case was far more than I wanted to spend just for a case. I'd love something I could just VESA mount to the back of the TV like the NUC but it's just difficult finding that form factor with graphics...

This is a great list. And Amazon just offered me a nice Corsair liquid CPU cooler that hasn't been released to the public yet, to review. Problem is that I don't see how I could get that cooler to fit in this case, it has a 240mm radiator, so I may just get everything else in this list and look for a case I could use this cooler I just picked, hopefully keeping it at the XB1X or smaller form factor so it will still work in my TV stand. And if I can't find a case to use it in, I can always just get the one you recommended here and not even use the liquid one.

Thank you! I've had bad experiences with AMD CPU's in the past, but the newer Ryzen CPU's have had some great reviews. Looking forward to seeing how this build will work as my media center.

Looks like I'll have to forego the small form factor if I want to play with the water cooler. So I'm thinking I'll have to do something like this, and simply hide it behind the whole TV corner unit. I can use a WEMO and set the BIOS to start on power loss so I can hard power it off if needed, and a USB extension cable for the dongle for the mini keyboard/trackpad unit I use for this. Plenty of air flow back there, so should be OK, just totally out of site this way...

Not what I really wanted, but what the heck. And with the board's range of RAM support, I can actually reuse the RAM in my current system and see how it works with that, and then buy the faster if needed...

Thanks again everyone.

There are mini-itx that can handle 240mm rads. My rosewill Neutron is mini-itx, and has a cryorig A40 in it.

That's an even bigger case than the Corsair case I had found above, so I think I'll probably go with the one I found and all the other parts you had in the original post (other than the power supply, got a different EVGA power supply due to the form factor change of the case). Since I will be getting the radiator from Amazon for testing, don't need to buy that, and I'll be using my existing RAM with this board at least at first, and replace it if needed, so I'll get away with this for about $525 getting it all free 2 day with Amazon prime. Prices were so similar it just made it easier to use all these listed parts from there to get them this week... :)

Ordered and will have Saturday.

Thanks again - your help has been invaluable!

OK, so this Asus ROG board will *NOT* support the second M.2 SSD if the Ryzen 5 2400G (or any CPU with onboard graphics) is used...

So since this was apparently the only system board with two M2 slots, now I have to determine if I want to keep it anyway and just one one since I have an OS installed already, or if I want to return it to get something else.

Alternatively I could return the CPU and get a different CPU and a low end graphics card that would work for what I need, just 4k videos and other media center use, not gaming...

Suggestions? I'm leaning towards just keeping things as it is and using just the 1TB M2 drive for simplicity's sake. I could be mostly done tonight with everything then, unless there's a compelling reason to ditch this CPU, get another, and pick up a separate graphics card?

Thanks

John
