Hello,
Recently i bought a cheapish 4k tv.
It plays all my 4k movies from my xbone s great.
I recently decided to hook up my desktop to see how it works.
The manual on my tv reports 4k at 30hz.
Plug in the pc through hdmi 2.0 cable (dp 1.2 to hdmi didn't display anything)
Strangly the tv reported 1080p as native.
Set the res to 4k and booted a few games to test (witcher 3, alan wake)
Both games reported 45-60fps on the steam overlay.
Why are the games running this high fps, when the manual reports 30hz max??? Im confused.
Specs :
I5 6600k
16gb ddr4
256gb ssd
R9 fury x.

Solution
Just because the steam overlay reports over 30 fps doesn't mean that your TV actualy has a higher refresh rate.
Your graphics card might output 40-50-60 fps but if your TV hs 30hz it will only refresh the image 30times per second :)
If you check your display settings in windows it "should" show the refresh rate of your TV.

Yea i looked for a refresh rate in windows 10 resolution section but cant see it, where abouts is it?
I thought it might be the case of steam reporting hiw many frames its sending, not how many are being displayed.
Yea the fury x only has hdmi 1.4, hence why i attempted to use my 4k dp 1.2 to hdmi 2.0.

Mmmmm I'm not at home but for instance in my windows 8 work PC , where you change resolution, there is a button for advanced settings which brings up a window that also has a monitor tab. In there the refresh rate can be seen/changed.
If not, it should be somewhere in the Gfx card applicaton... I have nvidia so dunno with that :)

Ummmm no. Thats WAS the case ages ago.
You set chroma subsampling to 4:2:0 in crimson, which compresses the color allowing 4k 60hz through hdmi 1.4a, maxing out the cable at 8.16gbps.

I stand (sit) corrected. I would argue the symantics of that solution degrading the quality of the display, but yes it will report 4k at higher than 30fps
