Howdy, the mobile app has gotten very hard to navigate so I'm sorry if this ends up in the wrong area.

So long story short, I'm looking for 4k TV's that either have 4:4:4 at 4k 60Hz or bare minimum 4:4:4 at 4k 30hz. They all seem out of my price range (less than a grand). I've been looking at the Spectre u500(/508)cv-umk and the new Vizio M series.

However, does anyone know how much 4:2:0 chroma subsampling effects video games? I haven't been able to find good pictures of what 4:2:0 looks like vs 4:4:4 in relation to gaming.

I've taken the time to understand what chroma subsampling is but I'm still not sure if going from a 1080p plasma Panasonic tc p42s2 (42 inches) would be a huge increase in quality without also upping in size. I sit about 3-6 feet from my tv now and the Spectre is 49" while the vizio is 43". So that's where I'm stuck.

So in total I'm asking:
-How much does 4:2:0 chroma subsampling effect video games?
-Would the increased resolution still give a better picture quality despite the 4:2:0 than my current 1080p set?
-What are the cheapest 4k 4:4:4 TV's you know of?

Thank you for your help in advance.
P.s. I have a computer than can run games at 4k so this TV would mostly be for that.

to my knowledge its pretty much only the highest end 4k tv's that support 4k 60hz and 4:4:4 at the same time. like TC-65AX800U for example (which also has a dp input)

i went with a Vizio P series because i happened to find the p652 for $1250, so i had to pull the trigger. i use it as a monitor for my PC which i use for text / web / gaming / movies (using a AMD 295x2)

1) if your goal is gaming in 4k @ 60hz. you will need dual titan x or 980ti cards in SLI for games that would actually benefit from 60hz like first person shooters; if you are playing minecraft going to 60hz from 30hz isnt gonna blow you away. any other setup other then the SLI mentioned above will get you less then 60fps for games like GTA V or Far Cry 4. in gta v i think the benchmark app shows high 50's FPS for me. p series is known for a really low input lag (for tv standards)

2) i have to use a dp to hdmi adapter. so i am limited to 4k @ 30hz anyways (no current dp to hdmi adapter supports 4k @ 60hz). GTA V and FC4 look and play fantastic at 30hz. though i gave my old Sony 55hx800 to my GF, and when i take my computer to her house and play GTA in 1080p at 60hz it does look smooth!

3) even when new adapters come out and i will be able to get 4k @ 60hz to my tv, i will leave it set to 30hz while doing text and web (so i dont have to worry about subsampling) and only set it to 60hz when gaming and possibly for movies (though i dont know if my card will push 60fps for the games i play anyways)

4) sorry i dont really know how the subsampling effects gaming when using 4k @ 60hz

5) i noticed on many forums that tv's that do support 4:4:4 4k 60hz usually have bad input lag, which would kill your gaming experience

6) i normally never recommend monster cables, but on top of everything else you will need a hdmi cable of 18+Gbps for 4k 60hz 4:4:4, which monster has a line, i bought the monster black premium which supports 27Gbps just to be safe. many cables that say they are hdmi 2.0 compatible are less then 18Gbps because they still technically support 4k @ 30hz. if you dont want to spend $80 on a cable amazon/monoprice has some 18Gbps for $20ish, but i wanted headroom to know that the cable wouldnt be my weekest link if problems arose.

so my suggestion.

either

1) go for a 4k monitor (you will get what you need, but pay a lot more for a smaller size) (but do this if you have cards that can actually push 4k @ 60hz for the games you want to play)
or
2) just get a 4k tv and accept 4k 30hz for gaming. you can do this with the 295x2 or 970 sli or 980 sli, or single 980ti or single titan. yes other cards/setups can display 4k res, but they probably wont give you acceptable FPS

i just found a thread on overclock . i asked :

is there a difference for gaming 4k 60hz with subsampling vs 4k 30hz without subsampling (besides the FPS difference, as in difference in detail)?

i will update when/if i get an answer

by the way he said the 49ub8500 does support 4k 60hz 4:4:4

If you want under $1k, the LG is probably the only option, but it's pretty good. I've got a UB8500 and it's fine. (Don't even notice the horizontal lines) You MAY have a problem if you do a lot of FPS games, as that LG line has a higher lag than other TVs. ~15ms in 2d and >60ms in 3d, which makes using the 3d for FPS games fairly poor. I play mostly games like XCOM and Skyrim which don't need twitch reflexes, so I barely notice, even in 3d.

To answer your question, 4:2:0 is okay for gaming-- you barely notice it on live video and games (sharp details might be slightly fuzzier), but you'll definitely notice when you're on the OS desktop and there is very sharp edged contrasting colors. Google "4:4:4 vs 4:2:0" and switch to images. There are plenty of image comparisons. (Mostly live video, but also some OS desktop images)

But if you want to do a lot of FPS gaming, especially competitive online, you may want to find a set that has a lower latency.

And yes, 4k at 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 will still be much better than 1080p.
