I use it as my campaign's clerical magic.

The basic theory is that mana is a force and the gods can grant innate
control in constrast to mages who have to study in order be able to
control mana.
Calamities result because the gods are warping the fabric of reality in
order to do this. So too much in too short of a time will have bad
results. Recovery occurs as a result of acts of faith which strength the
god's ability to effect reality.
Calamities dont' occur for mages because they are using willpower to
control the natural mana around them. But the downside is that they are
limited by their fatique and/or powerstones.
As a third option I have allowed advanced mages to learn how to control
mana like the gods. After many quests and research. These use the UMana
rules pretty much as written.
I have alimited number of dieties in my campaign but in a world with a
more diverse pantheon you could vary the spell lists, threshold and
recovery rates to
allow for differing power levels of the gods.
