5 Computer Limit When Sharing a printer

Hello everyone, I am wondering if you can ask my about a networking limitations. So, my Networking teacher asked us a question yesterday. He asked, "why is there a limit of 5 computers in a small network when they are sharing a printer. I hope you guys can help me with this answer. Thank you.

If memory serves, 5 connections is a limitation of Home versions of Windows on small networks. Pro / Ultimate versions I believe allowed for 10 or 20 connections max. Pretty much limitations of the OS and if you want connectivity beyond 5 / 10 / 20 connections, you need Windows Server.

The 5 concurrent connection limit was for Windows XP Home Basic. Home Premium and higher allowed 10. Windows 7 & above (all versions) allow 20 concurrent connections. If more concurrent connections are required then one must upgrade to a server OS.
