Hi,

I haven't built a system unit in a while, last time was when 970 was initially released. I'm at a lost on which CPU to look for and whatnot. I'm not sure if upgrading my current rig is worth than building a new one from scratch.

Current Rig :

Operating System
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i5 4460 @ 3.20GHz 38 °C
Haswell 22nm Technology
RAM
12.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (9-10-9-26)
Motherboard
ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. B85-PRO GAMER (SOCKET 1150) 33 °C
Graphics
ZOWIE XL LCD (1920x1080@144Hz)
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (Gigabyte) 38 °C
Storage
232GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB (SSD) 38 °C
931GB Seagate ST1000DM003-1ER162 (SATA) 35 °C

Solution
Your existing comp seems quite good.
Only real upgrades are -
Ram - would adding a bit more make any difference? Probably not
CPU - going from 4 core to 4c/8t would make a tiny difference, but not a lot
GPU - 970 is still an adequate card, but changing that to a 1060 would show a little improvement, a 1070 would show a vast improvement.

I wouldnt upgrade anything aside from CPU to something with 8 cores and a good clock, everything else should run any new generation game without problems(Though not at ultra, as your graphic card is good, but not THAT good)

Check what CPU's with these characteristics can fit in your socket and i think you'll be doing fine for a gaming computer.

Anyways your CPU is good enough to run most last generation games, if not all of them at low settings.

If its because a program runs slow, try checking in task manager if your CPU usage and RAM usage are full when running said program.

You do realise, the new ones probably won't be released until Q4 2018, another 3- 4 months away
