Hello. I got a great deal of help on this forum in 2011 when I made this rig and I'm coming back for more suggestions now. I was considering upgrading to the i5-4690k, but after further researching I found out that it actually wouldnt be much of an upgrade. Here is the original thread for reference if anyone is curious:

2011 Build Thread

dalauder was especially helpful. Here are my original parts. All of which are still working.

The build. I know my cable management stinks and its dirty as hell. Please be gentle.

Rosewill Computer Case - CHALLENGER - ATX Mid Tower

Intel i5-2500k SandyBridge

MSI P67A-C43 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX

2 x G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

Antec TruePower New TP-650 650W

SAPPHIRE 100282XTREME Radeon HD 5850 Xtreme 1GB 256-bit GDDR5

Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"

LITE-ON 24X DVD Writer Black SATA Model iHAS424-98

I have since upgraded (2012) to this SSD for OS and used the original HDD as storage/backup.

Intel 330 Series SSDSC2CT240A3K5 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC SSD

This is the monitor I bought in 2011, still going good:

ASUS VH232H Glossy Black 23" 5ms Widescreen Full HD 1080p LCD

I also had to replace the stock cooler with a simple Rocketfish when mine borked while cleaning it a few years back.

Approximate Purchase Date: ASAP

Budget Range: $500-$800 Before rebates and promos. Less is always better.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Amazon/eBay selling, Light to mid range gaming on high settings, some virtual PC work, light photo/video editing and storage, etc.

Are you buying a monitor: Probably not. This monitor has been good to me, but I wouldnt rule out a good value LED. Wish I could afford a 4k monitor, but maybe in a few years.

Parts to Upgrade: Case, PSU, Video card, cooler, RAM to 16gb, Another SSD, and removable media drive. Preferably a BD recorder or player.

Do you need to buy OS: No

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Newegg. I have a preferred account.

Location: NM, USA

Parts Preferences: No preference overall on most parts. I trust the Intel SSD but have heard good things about samsung.

Overclocking: Most likely. Still running stock i5-2500k and a complete noob to OC, but I think I may need to do that now that its a little older.

SLI or Crossfire: I think my MB only has one PCI 2.0 X 16 slot.

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080 I believe.

Additional Comments: Quiet is best.

Why Are You Upgrading: I live in a dry, dusty climate and it has become quite loud. Every moving part except the original 1 TB HDD makes a sputtering noise. I would also like to play future games on max settings. I know the video card is dated. GTA V comes to mind.

Below are some parts I have been considering:

Rosewill REDBONE - Black SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory

Rosewill 750W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply

Sapphire Radeon R9 280 3GB Dual-X Video Card

Intel 730 Series SSDSC2BP240G4R5 2.5" 240GB SATA 6Gb/s MLC (SSD)

I think this is just a reader though. Not a BD recorder.
LG Black 12X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA Internal Blu-ray Disc Drive Model UH12NS30

Completely lost on which cooler to pick. Especially for OC.

Any help/discussion is greatly appreciated. If any of the links are wrong I apologize. Thanks for reading this long speel, and thanks in advance for any constructive contributions.

So this one?
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

Did you see how dusty and caked the PSU is? Should I just get some canned air for that?

Also, both those cases have front USB 3.0 ports and my board doesnt support that🙁 Just the two USB 3.0 ports built in on the back.

It would be hard to find a case that didnt have front USB3 now
Adapters are available so they can just plug in to USB2 ports on the mb and operate as USB2 .

Yes that RAM is identical spec , and would give you a total of 12 gig which is more than you are likely to need .
[I didnt notice you had two sets of 2 x2 the first time round . 8 gig is enough for almost any use . Check in task manger to see how much you are using . More RAM might not be needed ]

The dust can be cleaned off . A case with filters will slow down future problems

This? I just need one adapter for both front ports correct?

Is there a particular brand of the 970 youd recommend?

Yes that converter cable is what you need and it will work for both ports . But research your case before you buy . Some cases may even include the adapter

If I was buying a GTX 970 it would be the ASUS Strix or Gigabyte Windforce [ with 3 fans ] .
Both have zero Db coolers that wont start spinning the fans till you start a game .
