Hi guys, I'm planning on spending around 500 on a base to start on and using some old parts from my AMD build from 2005 which recently just went out on me. I'll be re-using a 430 watt ThermalTake powersupply as well as a 2 or 3 SATA hard drives that are holding all my files. I have a 6800gs and was wondering if the onboard video on the 790gx chipset was better or should i stick it in. I don't do much gaming nowadays so having a new video card isn't that important to me right now. I'll upgrade to a 500w or so powersupply and a HD 4870 512mb when I have the extra cash to spend.

I have a few questions though. I have an old 12x Lite-on Dvd burner but it's an IDE connection. Would it much of a big improvment to move to SATA? I don't really burn DVD's and the CD speeds of today's models are pretty much the same as back then it seems. Also i might do a little overclocking but never really messed with it before. Would you recommend me on getting some artic silver 5? What do you think i could improve on in this build?

Thanks for your help.

*Edit* Also i forgot I'll be using Windows XP pro 32 bit as well as a 19" Samsung LCD monitor.

So far my system looks like this...

Your 6800GS is a little faster than the 790GX.

SATA really doesn't improve performance. Since you're mostly burning CDs, use your old burner.

Lower voltage G.Skill 1066 for $16 less.

Biostar mobo combo for $29 less.

I would also advise against Seagate as they are currently experiencing HDD issues. The Caviar Black 640GB is very nice but $20 more.

Thanks for your response. I think Seagate problem is related to the 7200.11 drives though not the newer 7200.12 that hold 500gb on one platter which should also make it faster. You have any advice for a wireless adapter? Is a PCI one better than a USB based one?

Read this regarding the new Seagate.

I don't know much about wireless adapters, but I would get a USB one in case your next mobo has no PCI slot.

I thought that actually might be a pretty good drive too, i figure down one platter 500gb's pretty decent spec's had no clue they were suffering from something like firmware issue, I'lls tick w/ my es.2 i guess, although 250gb as a storage is getting a little tight.
