500W PSU for R9 280?

I am giving my brother my old computer. It has a Corsair CX500M PSU in it. I got him a new graphics card, a XFX R9 280 Double Dissipation Black Edition, and on the box it recommends a 750W PSU. Will I be safe to use the 500W power supply or should I get more powerful PSU? He won't be overclocking any components.

Corsair CX PSUs aren't great, but 500w is more than enough, 750w is way too much.

500w is recommended for a 280 but your psu is very bad so power outtages may happen often, get a new 550w psu from evga, xfx or seasonic to be safe

A Radeon R9-280 needs at least 30AMPS ON THE 12V + RAIL and a 500w - 550w watt power supply.

The CX500 can run it but a better quality PSU should be used.

I agree with this to some extent..... the Cx is not the worst you can have but with a good gpu id go with http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seasonic-power-supply-m12ii620bronze but that's just my opinion

CX PSUs aren't too bad, it should be fine, but if he wants to be safe get an XFX Pro 550W PSU.
