corrymwiggins :
hey guys,
my fiancee and I are breaking down and buying ourselves a desktop computer. I have given up on playing games on a laptop that is a few years old... I was looking at getting the same computer as mjforet and am actually in the same position as he is. The main games I am looking to play are Diablo 3 and a few other MMO's that I can already play on my laptop. I was wondering if those items listed (that he posted) were the best possible choices in a number of categories.
1. easy installment, I have installed a graphics card before but never a power supply
2. other-than-gaming-uses, being seniors in college we are going to be using the desktop for alot of papers
3. future use, will these items be able to stay current for a few years since things will be getting tight when student loan payments start coming up
as you can tell I really dont have much experience with computers and computer parts so simple talk would be appreciated
Corry,
Welcome to THG - you can get some great advice here. If you want to maximize the number of responses, then you should really start your own thread. If you Jack a thread, then you won't get a response from some people...less advice coming to you. I can understand wanting to piggy back on the info in this thread, but you'll get less responses this way. Your gaming requirements do not require an uber-PC even if you want to game at Ultra graphics settings.
Let's start with a couple of questions for you:
1. What is your budget? Something that you're comfortable with...I'm assuming that it is at least $520 + tax + Monitor (if you don't have one) + GPU + PSU. You're pushing $900 - $1100 depending on whether or not you have the monitor. That is a budget that can get you a much nicer homebuilt PC with more long-term stamina. Or a comparable PC for significantly less.
2. Do you have a keyboard, mouse, monitor, and speakers/headphones? What size monitor do you have or do you want?
3. Do you have a copy of MS Office or are you going to be using something like OpenOffice?
4. Do you have a non-OEM copy of Windows?
5. Do you want/need the digital medai card reader that comes with this PC?
6. Do you expect to do a lot of video/photo editing?
You can answer in this thread and at least I will respond or you can start another thread with your baseline situation and the answers to these questions. All of your responses will impact the recommendations that are given.
