Problem is that the computer starts but is never shows a screen (not even the initial bios screen/mobo screen)

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Do you have onboard video? (You'd have a VGA or DVI or HDMI output of you did)

If so, it's possible that your BIOS is defaulted to onboard video which you aren't connected to. In that case you'd:

1) hook up to the motherboard video
2) change the BIOS to PCIe first (or only)
3) switch to graphics card

Your graphics card could also be defective or there's another issue but you'd need another graphics card to test that. I always keep an old card around in case I have issues but if you're stuck, borrow or buy a cheap $30 HD6000 or HD5000 series.
