Hello,

I am looking to upgrade my rig to a ddr5/am5 setup and i will only keep the old GPU (rx580) and powersource (a 3 year old 550w seasonic focus 80+ gold). Old cpu had a tdp of 65w, and i dont plan on doing any overclocking.

I have checked a few calculators and i am getting conflicting results. Some say this powersouce is sufficient, others advise upgrading to a 650w.

Obviously the more the better. But is an upgrade really necessary in this case?

But is an upgrade really necessary in this case?

No.

RX 580 is 185W. R7 7700X is 102W (up to 148W with turbo) CPU. Two combined would be ~335W. Add the rest of the system to it at ~100W and max load would be ~440W. So, without CPU/GPU OC, your good quality 550W Seasonic unit is well enough capable of powering your upgraded build.

Higher wattage PSU would be nice to have, especially when you OC your CPU/GPU (plenty of wattage headroom for OC). But there is no necessity to upgrade PSU.
