550watt PSU for Gigabyte GTX 970 Extreme Edition

Specs:

Cpu: i5 4670k oc 4.0 Ghz
Ram: 8 gigs (2x4) corsair LPX ram
Motherboard: Asrock Z87 extreme 3
PSU: Seasonic G550 80+Gold

More than running at stock, I plan to OC this but I want to know if that is even possible before dropping 360$ for this guy.

Gigabyte recommends a 600 watt, but you should be fine with that PSU. I calculated your wattage at about 400 even with overclocking.

Would you recommend upgrading down the line(the PSU)?

Not necessary unless you go to a more powerful video card. The G series Seasonic are excellent, and it won't have any problems. I think the card makers overstate the wattage as a hedge against people that use cheap power supplies that don't even achieve their advertised wattage.
