I have the option to either get a 5600x or 5800x right now. From what I've read the 5600x is more than good enough for gaming and the 5800x and 5900x dont offer that much more performance in that department. My main concern is future proofing since I'm building a new system and ive read that the 5600x only being a 6 core cpu, which is perfect for now, may not be as future proof as a 8 or 12 core processor down the line. I also possibly plan on streaming/multitasking from time to time so would that extra 2 cores benefit me in that area?

I guess I could go with the cheaper 5600x and than down the line if gaming starts requiring more cores in the future it would be something id just need to upgrade at that time. Just looking for some insight from people who know more about this than me. Thanks.

On the other hand for the price of the 5800X you could buy a 3900XT with better multicore performance than a 5600X or 5800X ?
You could then wait for prices to drop on the "5" series or wait until the next gen comes out if the mobo supports it of course.

5600X is good in games and as all-rounder CPU. 5900X - for heavy multithreaded tasks like vide encoding, archiving, compiling etc. 5800X is somewhat in middle. 3900X is slower than 5800X but with extra cores.

Lucky you. Before new year's eye I was forced to purchase 5800X only because it was only CPU worth to have left in stock :D

Originally before the new cpus came out I was all locked in to go with the 3900x but than I saw that the 5800x/5900x are faster and benchmark typically 11 percent better for gaming than the 3900x. Saying that the 3900x is still an amazing cpu for gaming either way.

But if games are barely utilizing 8 cores right now, would a 12 core even be worth it at this time especially if mostly what I do is game? I'm not a streamer by any means but I do like to stream my gameplay every now and than for whatever reason so I think the 5800x will do that pretty well. I have a 2700x right now, an 8 core processor that seems to handle gaming and streaming pretty well. 5800x should be able to perform even better.

Yes, there are still very few games capable to utilize all available cores. Most of them are happy with 2-4 cores and all older ones are single threaded anyway.

I'm not complaining about my 5800X. So far it was capable to lift all games I tried so far. Now I see where my GPU is bottlenecking.

I originally wanted 5600x and wasnt available and bought the 5800x. After more time thinking about the price jump $299 to $449 for 2 more cores, I sold the 5800x and grabbed the 5900x for $100 more.
Im not saying get a 5900x, but that to me the 5800x isnt a good value

Yea I've heard it runs hot. I was thinking about the nzxt kraken x63 360mm aio. Would that keep the cpu cool enough?
I heard this too, and seen a few videos showing it. Also seen many comments say its a bad one and you must be unlucky. But to me if that many bad ones exist There must be an issue with either QC or the cpu design itself.

What do you have right now? If it's good enough for what you want to do, maybe waiting for Zen 4 by the end of this year or early next year would be a better option, assuming it's still on track for Dec 2021 release. Zen 4 will have DDR5 support with ram speeds starting at 4800MT/s comapred to 2933-3600 with Ryzen 3000/5000. To me, the 5800X would only makes sense to buy right now if it were $375-400. I didn't even like the idea of spending $300 for my 5600X, but I needed another CPU right now and I plan to make it into a multi use server later on when I upgrade to Zen 4.

Yeah a 5900x for 100 more wouldn't be a bad idea but I feel in my situation a 5800x would be more than future proof for awhile. Both are pretty much same gaming performance and games aren't utilizing 8 cores much as it is now so I can't imagine games using 12 cores for years.

I have a H150i and it stays at like 55 degrees, but it means my fans and pump etc can run on silent and my cpu can boost as much as it wants. Which in comparison is quieter than my i5-7600 with a cooler master 240 was and considerably cooler than the i5-7600 with stock cooler (although the cooler master had it sat at like 35 in gaming).

Even the 5600x is great for gaming. Theres only a few fps to gain from 5600x up to 5900x, and in some games no gain at all.

I went with the 10900k because there was nothing AMD anywhere without scalper tax attached.

P.S. It's plenty worth to have.

You'll be fine. The Kraken AIOs are solid...

If the 3080 and 5800x can already run 1440 144hz pretty good at what point will a newer cpu really do justice unless your going for 4k gaming or better? And also wouldn't you need a completely new motherboard that will be compatible with the new ram and cpu technology to even run the new cpu and ram?

Are you sure? I literally bought my cpu from Newegg and shipped to the UK and it was still cheaper, than an intel build (taking motherboard into account)

It may have been... I should have worded my post better, I was only considering 5900/5950x which weren't available.

My point was that if you wait, you can get a much faster CPU with Zen4 cores and much faster ram than if you bought Ryzen 3000 or 5000 now. Yes, you will need a new motherboard because Zen4 will be on a new socket and use DDR5 ram which will use a different slot pin-out from DDR4, unless AMD decides to use socket AM4 for one last release and use DDR4 instead.

Depending on the game, your 2700X is currently going to be 5-15% slower at 1440p than a 5600x and nearly the same fps at 4k resolution, so why bother upgrading right now? It's not like you won't be able to upgrade to a discounted Ryzen 5000 in the future if Zen4 is too expensive and doesn't offer enough benefit to you.

I see what your saying but my point is when is new technology not even going to be worth it at a certain point. If I build a rig right now that can excel in 1440 and even 4k, what will the new technology do? Push over 144 fps in 1440? I mean at that point you can barely tell the difference.

I made this decision and went with the 8-core 5800x simply because some games perform better with more cores, take it Warhammer or strategy games like civ, even death stranding is shown to play better on more cores, plus you get some better streaming etc and future proof. The only thing the 5600x beats the 5800x on is price and lower voltage I believe and that's why AMD designation the 5800x their Elite e-sports chip tuned for professional high refresh gaming.

Further to note they run better the more you cool them, so if you can get a 360mm on it then do it, but I have a 240mm and it's playing everything on a 240hz monitor 1080p no problem and 1080p gaming is CPU intensive hope this helps your decision.

You can pretty much play all the games with a 6 cores 12 threads at the moment but you did good buying the 8 cores.

If the 5800x was 349$ and the 5600x was 199$ the answer would be solid. (go for the 5600x, but if you had more budget go for a 5800x) sadly amd bumped up the prices. They would probably gotten more people to buy their products if they kept the same pricing because imagine the 5800x as a 8 core 16 thread beast for 350 dollars.
