I woke up this morning after leaving comp on overnight. and checked comp. Notice my normal idle temp of higher 30s (cels) was at 57. Checked task manager, and msmsgs is locked at 50%, using 4mb memory. So my cpu usage is at 51% constantly. Why is this, and is this something to be concerned about? Or did the system just got stuck in a loop or something before I went to bed last night?

- Since this happen I have ended the task; my temps/CPU usage are back down.

Can't have been that long ago... considering 3.1 was released only about a month ago.

I'm not running MSN messager, I told it not to start with windows, and its never in the tray. Isn't 'msmsgs' different, or is their msn msger hiding out in the bgr?

Even if you tell it not to start up with windows it will no matter what you do so close the application in the task manager and uninstall it or delete the executable.

Not really good for anything but you cant help smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.

wpabaln.exe (Windows activation balloon reminder), alg.exe (Application Layer Gateway Service), spoolsv.exe (spooler service), smss.exe (Windows NT Session Manager) and csrss.exe (Client Server Runtime Process) are system files used by Windows.

Another way you could prevent Messenger from starting automatically on boot without having to edit registry is by renaming "msnmsgr.exe" to anything but that.

Also, if you go to start -> run -> type 'msconfig' and then go to startup tab, you could hypothetically uncheck the checkbox next to MsnMsgr to keep it from running on startup - very strange tho is that if you uncheck it and then restart, it 'mysteriously' creates another entry that is checked (some programs other than MSN Messenger do this too so something somewhere else overrides that window).

see endyen's post...

so is this a worm then, or simply microsoft messenger? Why was it locked at 50% CPU then when I have never seen that before?

I checked this page:
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/msmgs/

I have Norton Antivirus and will do a system scan, although the autoprotect never found it. Do I still need system doctor, endyen?

This is I found. http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/msmgs/.
If it's what you have, it looks fairly serious. Your call. If norton doesn't find it, I would uncheck it in start menu, at least. Probably delete it from prefetch, and system32 as well.

I renamed msmsgs and it is no longer running in the system. Norton didn't flag it. I wonder if it just got locked up somehow? Anyway, it won't be running in the bgr now. Any possibility that if this was/is a virus it will give me more problems if no longer running?

Most worms set up a prefetch, which loads the prog on startup. If they cant find the exe file, they generally create a new one. Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp, and let them have a look. You will have to shut down norton first I think.
