my specs:
p55 ud4p
core I5(not overclocked)
antec 900 case
4 gigs gskill 1333 ram
650 gig 7200 rpm hd
700 watt silent pro

I'm using an acer 1080p 23" monitor, right now I'm using a 5770 and playing crysis with all setting at gamer and 2 times aa it plays pretty smooth, I don't know what fps it comes out to, I don't know how to check, like I said, it's smooth but I did notice some hickups during the opening cut scenes.

My question is, I mostly play games like the total war series, but I also like the occasional FPS. Will I see any major benefits from bumping up to a 5850 when I game at 1080?

If you mostly play games like Total War, then I would say stick with the HD 5770.

If you progress more towards first person shooters (FPS), then the HD 5850 will ultimately become the better choice. Don't use Crysis as a benchmark for all FPS games since it can bring any system to it's knees.

If playing Crysis on the HD 5770 was enjoyable, then you should just stick with the card since current games are not as demanding. If should also serve you will enough for FPS games released in 2010. I think Crysis 2 is expected to be released in 2010. However, it will probably be less demanding than Crysis since it will not be an exclusive PC game.
