5770 vs. 5830 vs. 5850

I have been deliberating on a video card for quite some time. I am trying to build a $700 gaming rig, and I have knocked my choices down to:

XFX Radeon HD 5770

Of those two choices the HD 5770 is a much better buy. If you have a crossfire mobo you can always slip in a second later if needed (would be the performance equivalent of between a single GTX470 and HD 5870). The HD 5830 is more expensive than a GTX 460 768MB and about 10% slower.

So...from what I've read so far the GTX 460 Fermi is the better card, 768 Mb or 1 Gb. But which one should I go with? Will the 256 Mb make that much of a difference? Also, are there any certain brands you would recommend over another?

I would go for the GTX460 1GB unless the $30 difference is a deal breaker. There is more than just a memory difference. the 768MB ver has 24 ROPS and a 192bit memory interface. The 1GB has 32 ROPs and a 256 bit memory interface. I'd choose one of these cards over the 5830 ANY day. the 5830 sucks to much power and is the same size as a 5870. It was just a throw together card if you ask me. Unlike the GTX460 which was made to be a $200 card. Not a $400 dumped down until they could sell it as a $200 card.

What is the rest of your system? Is that $700 just hardware for the PC? does that include case? list your stuff and we can always trim the fat.

If you WERE going to go with the 460 (which I would, since you are spending 700 on a computer anyway and that least a lot of room, hell I just built my friend a bad ass rig off newegg for 600 with a 460 1gb version), I would get the 1GB version of either the EVGA, ASUS DirectCU, or MSI Twin Frozr version of the card (those are best three in my opinion).

Concerning the HD 5770 vs. the HD 5830 the latter is much larger physically and uses more power than an HD 5850 (although both use about the same or a little less than a GTX 460 1GB). Crossfire scaling also seems to favor the lower level ATI cards, so an HD 5770 might be the better choice with that in mind (I'll see if I can find backup for that thought somewhere). I'm actually kicking around the idea of a X-fire HD 5770 set up vs. getting another Nvidia card, just because my mobo doesn't support SLI. That might be a consideration for the OP as well.

I don't think I should get the high end 5770 when I can get a 5830 for 10 bucks more. I am looking to crossfire, but it's a complicated one. I am going to crossfire, but way in the future, when my card I buy becomes cheap. Is that concise enough?

My monitor is 19 inches and 1600x1200. Its a samsung, with a 5ms response time. Is all of this good enough? I plan on getting a 1080p monitor in the future.

well so far as to your statements, i found this

5770 in crossfire crysis warhead

single 5830 crysis warhead

cossfired 5770's get 43 fps in crysis at 1600 x 1200 while a single 5830 gets 35 fps

though i cant currently find a 5830 crossfire review that has crysis warhead as a benchmark, i believe that it can pass the 5770'2

Okay, so at this point I have decided not to get a 5770, but rather consider the HD 5830 vs. GTX 460. I WILL, repeat WILL Crossfire/SLI in the future. So all things considered....here are the options:

If you have the same motherboard you picked in the previous post you can NOT SLI on that motherboard without hacked drivers, something I wouldn't mess with.

Also do you mind if someone here takes a stab in the dark at helping you build a 700 dollar rig? You made some odd choices that I wouldn't approve of, that we could get figured out for you, afterwards you can take it over to the homebuilt section and have it refined.

NVM, I see you did ask for help, give me about 15 minutes and I'll be happy to throw something together for you.

EDIT- is the 700 dollars just for the tower and operating system? Or do you need a monitor, mouse, and keyboard as well?

Also going off the last links you sent, if you spent 200 on a graphics card after that, it would 760 dollars after MIR, so is your budget strictly 700 dollars, because even you went over that.

My budget is 700 for the tower and software only. I already have a nice monitor and a nice mouse.

EDIT: Those weren't the specific prices I found. I am traveling right now, and so I have the proper pricing and bookmarks for the deals at my desktop at home. I can get the pc for 710-ish based on the deals I have on my desktop.

Well, what you picked out is ok, OCZ ram is kind of bad now, myself and a friend have had really bad luck with OCZ ram, get this combo instead (its a CPU and Ram combo just like you have), its cheaper, the CPU isn't as good but the one you picked out was a little overboard, and the Ram is much better.

I know it can do 460 SLI

A good brand name is much more important then watts when you decide what PSU to get. The PSU is something you want to have a well made one of, and it doesn't get much better then Corsair, the new Antecs, Fratlity OCZ, SeaSonic, Tangen, and PC Power and Cooling also come to mind.
