Ok so here is the story:

I am build a new computer in November as a present to my self (early Christmas present).

Intel Core i7-2600K
GIGABYTE G1.SNIPER2
G.SKILL Sniper Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 CL7
30" 2560 x 1600 resolution

With that being said, MOBO only has two PCI Express slot.

Should I get a GTX580 3gb with room to add another in the near future, or
a GTX590 and add another in the not so distance future, or
get a MOBO that allows three PCI express slots and go for the GTX580 and just keep adding?

I do not want more than one monitor, or 3D, just some VERY high quality, VERY high resolution gaming.
I have tried to search but I see many different variation of the set up but not one that I can relate to.

I appreciate any and all advice/comments.

No, three 580s is overkill if you don't want more than one monitor or 3D, dont waste your money.

Don't bother with the 590, too many problems with them, there just not worth buying. Get yourself a 3GB 580 and then think about getting a second one later.

With the MOBO I have in mind I wouldn't be able to do 3-way SLI, however I would have like it for later on. But I am OK with just SLI. I will not be at 1080p but 2560 x 1600 resolution. I have seen a lot of post saying 3-way 580 would be better then SLI 590, but being limited to two I was contemplating going 590. Right now I will only purchase one card in maybe six months to a year a second one. The third one would probably have been purchased in 2 years or so, if my MOBO have a third slot.

What problems would that be? I know a few people that have the 590 and they are very happy with them. If you are referring to a few people that overclocked them too high and blew them when they first came out, that issue has been resolved in the updated drivers. And you push ANY card past it's threshold it will blow.

You do not need 3gb of VRAM for only one monitor, that would be a waste! If u decide with the 580 the 1.5gb will be plenty.

The 590 is 2 downclocked 580s in sli on one board. So if you have 2 590s you will be running Quad SLI. And that what makes it perfect if you only have 2 PCI-E slots. Maximun power using only 2 slots. If you are going to be overclocking get the EVGA 590, they have lifetime warranty that even covers if you blow the card by overclocking it too much.

If you are an experienced extreme overclocker then get the EVGA 580 classified. If not the 590s are wonderful and work amazingly on 2560x1600. Just look at the performance specs, they don't lie. http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-590-review/16

Hey I have two 580s and I game at 1920 by 1080, so it's less than you and I can comfortably say it will take care of you for a good while. You don't really need the 3GB either as they said that's more helpful for multi monitor support. The nice thing about 2 separate 580s is that it's faster because the 590s are underclocked. I personally have the Gigabyte GTX 580 OC (not superOC) editions and they run fantastically. I now have em under water to keep them cooler but even on air they load at around 78-82C TOPS. Plus they OC quite easily, and should you choose to WC them EK makes waterblocks that support them too. They also come with a mild OC as well which is nice.

Agreed. For high-performance gaming on 1920x1080 you will need more that one 580. For any real PC gamer out there you need to be playing at 60fps constant, for that extra smooth realistic gameplay, especially competitively online. some of these new games maxed out one 580 will only be running 30fps in some games.

Well the price difference from the 1.5GB to 3GB is so little That I really do not consider it worthy to save. It is like a $80 difference at most. I have seriously been reconsidering my MOBO to one which can have a 580 tri SLI.

From what it look like:

580 TRI SLI > 590 SLI > 580 SLI > 590 > 580
Please correct me if I wrong, and I know it will not apply to everything.

BTW I really do appreciate your help.

thats right, at the low end of the marke that $80 is huge but if youre already stumping up for 2 580's it seems stupid not the get the best one available, like getting a ferrari without the sports seats

WTF are you talking about. Hmm let's put the biggest card available on the smallest board possible. That's makes not sense whatsoever..... :pt1cable:

Like I've said before mate, go for two 3GB 580s.

And if you get a motherboard that supports three 580s then you can always get a third later on if you really want to, but I really do think that two 3GB 580s will be more than enough, as your not using 3D or having more than one monitor, but if it isn't at least you have the motherboard to buy a third if you want to.

The 590s are not good value what so ever and, have relatively poor quad-SLI scaling/performance.

So I have seen a few benchmarks and it seems in DX11 590 does better then 580, but in lower DX 580 does better. So how do you think it will perform in future games?

I don't think Direct X has anything to do with it to be honest. Metro did better with 3 580s and thats uses a lot of advanced DX11 features.

The 3GB wouldnt make a difference to the scores, if using the same resolution and settings, I doubt at the settings they were using the 1.5GB VRAM was all being used.

Anandtech took a look at Triple-GPU scaling and found that the minimum FPS actually decreased when going from two GTX 580 in SLI to three GTX 580 in Three-Way SLI.

If you want more performance to play at 5760 x 1080/1200, simply with the two 6970s

Is that difference really worth 200usd more?
