580 GTX fried, need replacement help.

So my N580GTX Twin Frozr II/OC finally gave out, bsod into white horizontal lines on the following boot up.

I was still happy with the 580's performance before it died, played witcher3 etc. I'm just here asking for advice on if i should spend the extra money on a 970 or considering i game at 1080 and was still happy with the 580 if a 960 will suffice.

If so can anyone recommend the better 960 model.

Well a 960 will vastly outperform the 580 since it is 3 generations newer. A 970 would be preferable for newer games on 1080P but if you were happy with a GTX 580 then you will be very happy with a GTX 960 at the same resolution.

As for the best one it depends. A lot of good brands but I would do the Asus:

The 2Gb of Ram the 960 has will be a limiting factor pretty soon here. I would recommend going to an r9 290x it's the same price or cheaper than a gtx 970 and usually out performs. Later if you choose to upgrade to 4k, 2 r9 290x can game at 4k closer to what 2x gtx 980s would give you fps wise.

Generally high settings, don't especially need high aa or shadows tbh.

Bought all of these like 3+ almost 4 years ago? Just need the replacement to last another year or so and then i will just buy another rig and hand this down.

If you don't want to spend much probably 960 should be suffice. Even that already and improvement over your 580.

IDK about buying something that performs similarly though. AMD 290 might be another good option as it will be a big step up performance wise.

That would be better. If he can get it cheap. But i don't put 960 and 580 as performing similarly. 580 is more like 660 in performance. Having 660Sli setup in the past i'm quite impressed how 960 fare against my old 660s.

Using the same setting in unigine heaven 3 (1600x900) this is my score:

Single 660: 2000
660 Sli: between 3500-3600
960 Strix (factory overclock): 3000
960 Strix (manual OC): 3200

Given this is only synthetic bench.
