I have the Asus rampage 5 extreme MB I like to oc my ram and cpu .
So it depends on the MB you have on the kind of oc you can do.
most MB all you need to do is move the CPU multiplier up one notch at a time keep the CPU volt on auto.
on the ram side use the xmp

I have the same CPU and I OC to 4.0gz.
that is a good OC CPU if you have good cooling like water full loop or if you have a good closed loop like a corsair H100I gtx .
you will see small game improvements. I can hit 4.6gz but not needed for gaming.
on OC.net I see some people getting 5.0gz but the temps go up as well so kind of over kill

Install MSI Afterburner, play your games with V-Sync OFF and monitor whether the GPU usage stays at 100% and full frequency. If it does, you are not limited by your CPU and shouldn't bother with overclocking.
