I'm going to update my x79 system by September and I am stuck deciding between the 5960x ($1000) and the 2630 v3 ($650). Right now, all I do (mostly) is gaming on my rig. However, I do plan on doing heavy rendering in the near future.
I currently have an R9 295x2 and will add either a 290x or 390x when I upgrade. Therefore, I will need over 32 PCIe lanes (40), which is why I need to stay on the lga 2011-3 socket. I also considered getting a 5930k and OC'ing it to a stable 4 ghz, but then again I've seen benchmarks of a stock 5960x similar to that of an OC (4.5ghz) 5930k in both gaming and applications.
If I do get the 2630 v3 I plan on giving it a little BCLCK OC to match the 5960x's stock performance as closely as possible. (stock Turbo clock is just .3ghz from the 5960x). However, I would really like to know if the xeon choice would somehow bottleneck my trifire setup in any way.
Right now I'm on sandy bridge (3820) and the difference from OC at 4.5ghz and stock turbo mode at 3.8ghz is very minute even in gaming. So I would be satisfied with around 3.5ghz, but the price is really a big factor.
Also, would the swiftech h220-x be suffice to OC either the 5960x or the 5930k to 4.5ghz?
Sorry for asking so many questions on one post xD
