5960x overclock big air vs aio

Hello, I recently upgraded from a 5820k to a 5960x. I was wondering if an aio such as the x62 kraken, 115i, evga clc 280mm improve the thermals compared to a r1 ultimate which I have already. The r1 kept my 5820k oc to 4.5 w/1.275vcore at 78c during stress tests. With the 5960x, attempting a 4.4 or 4.5 at that vcore I find myself stopping the real bench tests due it reaching the 80s quick. I read about people getting 4.5 at 1.275ish or more with big air. Honestly I don't see how that is possible from my experience with my old 5820k and from what I've seen with my 5960x. I was wondering if it is can worth upgrading to a 280mm aio. I heard that big air such as the r1 is only a degree or two around aios.

At a minimum, get an AIO...ideally, at the top end of the HEDT platform, you'd have a custom loop. You're the one and only person I've even heard of that tried to cool an 8 core Intel with an air cooler. That's gotta tell ya something.

Bought the evga clc 280 mm today and will test it out later tonight and provide an update. If that doesnt work i'll look into a custom loop

Was able to get the 5960x to 4.6 ghz, 1.275vcore and vccin at 1.9v temps averaged around 75 degrees with the hottest cores reaching 78 degrees in aida64. Any overclock with vccin at 1.8 failed miserably, so I first upped the vccin to 1.850v and was able to get 4.5ghz at 1.250vcore. Honestly the aio only allowed for an increased in 100 mhz over the R1 ultimate since I know that the R1 could handle the 1.250 vcore. In hindsight, it was not worth it upgrading from the R1 ultimate to the clc.

Yup. AIOs are great for mainstream processors. Get up in the top end of the HEDT platform, and ya really kinda need a custom loop.

Might look for a way to swap out that 5960X for a 6900k or something.....not lose any cores, and gain the ability to set clocks on individual cores. On the 6950X I had, I ran two cores at 4.7 for lightly threaded stuff, and had the rest clocked to 4.4 for the heavily threaded stuff.

A 6900k would be nice, but I highly doubt I'll be able to find one for $480 dollars like I did for the 5960x. I'll most likely look into a custom loop down the road. Thank you for the help
