[SOLVED] 5960x upgrade or not?

I'm considering a 10700k with MSI Z490 MPG EDGE (avg. board i know) mainboard upgrade.
I play games such as warzone at 1440p and do alot of 3D/CG/aftereffects work as a profession.
I have a O.C 4.2ghz 5960x and waiting to buy a 3080 card.

Here comes the question: Is it worth the upgrade considering the fact my processor is quite old and 3080 on the steps it might be a ok time to do a upgrade. Or will the difference be small and the 5960X is still a beast compared to the new ones?

No you don't need to upograde if you feel the 5960X still do everything you need fine.

But Im not quite sure the 5960X is a beast compared to newer CPU, not anymore.

The only reason to upgrade is if you really wana get everything a RTX 3080 can deliver, but at 1440p the diference in performance wont be huge either.

I recently sold off my 5960x and X99 motherboard - my main use is photo processing and transcoding blu rays to MKV files. I've done a fair amount of benchmarking as I enjoy optimizing equipment and processes.

I have a benchmark Handbrake encode that I've used with the following results(hours and minutes):

• 3950x - 1:33 - 16 cores/32 threads 53% CPU - I can run 2 simultaneously - 3950x is a BEAST
• 10700k - 2:29 - 8 cores/16 threads 98% CPU
• 5960x - 3:22 - 8 cores/16 threads 100% CPU
• 10600k - 3:32 - 6 cores/12 threads 100% CPU
• 4770k - 6:20 - 4 cores/8 threads 100% CPU

I got a new Dell XPS 10th gen I5 laptop early this year - just for kicks I ran the benchmark on that:
I5-10210u - 9:26 !!!!

FWIW...

On edit - a quick comment on power:
5960x was usually running 200 watts - mild OC
10700k - 180 watts minimal OC
3950x - 140 watts (minimal PBO OC)

Just get the 3080 card and see if your getting what you want out of it. Most probably you will have no complaints. Then later in the future when you upgrade your CPU you will get more frames per second at that 1440p resolution using all AA methods and ultra quality. I would say avg 30fps more in situations. Sometimes more if you went to a 10900k or a 9900k. 🙈💯🤷‍♂️👩‍🦲✝

I will be equipping my X99/6850k system with a 3080 - I am sure that at 2k resolution it will be at most 15% slower than 490z/10700k.

At stock clocks, even with 8 cores, ~3.0 GHz across all cores is likely going to equal about a stock i7-6700 (non-K); perhaps overclocked to 4.0 to 4.3 GHz, it could equal roughly an 8700K at stock clocks...still acceptable in my book..
