So most current cpus can easily hit 5GHz oc, but do you think that the next gen will have 5GHz base clock? Also does anyone think that 3rd gen ryzen will be able to hit 5GHz as easy as intel?

Solution
I remember years ago, overclocking to a stable 4Ghz was an amazing feat to obtain. Now as you mentioned we have CPU's that chip with a base clock of 4Ghz and can even turbo higher. So following that pattern, sure. But honestly there comes a point of diminishing returns. Architecture is still the main driver. So i don't think they necessarily have to go much higher.
I would expect high 4ghz turbos and maybe a close to 5.0ghz speed when overclocked due to the revised 7nm node. As we have seen with the 9900k overheating issues, intels 14nm architecture is maxed out so i doubt that unless intel shrinks there node or does more than a refreash of there existing architecture, they wont hit 5.0 ghz base.

There is this big illusion that clock speeds are the only thing that matters when it comes to core speed.

Thing is, it is not. There are a number of other factors that make a CPU fast, the number of transistors, speed of the L1-L3 caches. How many cores the CPUs have etc.

For example, AMD could easily sacrifice clock speed to add extra cores or maybe mash in more cache or whatever the architecture likes best.

So it isn't just clock speed that matters.

However, I do believe the rumors. So this round we might have a 5ghz boost clock on Ryzen chips which would be cool to see. But again, just a rumor.

As we know from the fx days, big numbers like 5ghz and massive core counts sell whether the technology is even relevant or not. I dont expect budget 3rd generation ryzen cpus to get to 5.0ghz, but it may be possible with an overclock. I expect for the high tier ryzen cpus AMD will target 12 or more cores and a max turbo of 5.0ghz to make up for AMDS lack of single threaded performance, but nobody really knows just how capable the 7nm process is yet. If ryzen 3000 cpus dont hit 5.0ghz initially they may try again for it with a more mature process with ryzrn 4000. I think ryzen 3000 will top out at 12 cores and only get to 16 in the 4000 series. I think amd will still add cores to keep the core lead, but will targed higher ipc, clocks, and single threaded performance, where they fall behind today
