6-Pin GPU power connector required?

I am doing my first build with a MSI z77 MPower motherboard, and I noticed there is a 6-pin video card power connected on the board that my power supply did not provide a cable for. I am using a GTX 660 Superclocked and was wondering if I need to use the connector if I'm supplying the power directly. Thanks in advance for any help.

If the PCI-E video card has it's own power connection on the card then the JPWR3 connection is not needed. This plug in only needed when the PCI-E video card does not have it's own power connection which is to ensure stability for the PCI-E video card without the external power connection."

You will need a 6 pin power connector to run the card. It will damage your parts if you try to run it without the extra power.

What is the wattage of your power supply? If it is 500 W or above, you can buy a molex to PCIe power adapter (requires two 4-pin molex connectors). Something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812706016

MSI's PR guy says the JPWR3 is for added stability when running multiple GPUs and when overclocking.

I have a 750w corsair with PCI-E connectors which don't quite fit the on board connection.
