Hello! My friend has played on console for a long time right now and he is deciding to make the switch. He has a budget of 600 dollars at the moment. Can someone recommend a build for him?

He currently has a ryzen 5 1600 af in mind but I personally don't think that is a good idea for the games he is going to play. He is also getting a 1650 super

He is going to play 1920 x 1080

Games are going to be rust, Call of duty, sea of thieves, minecraft, valorant, csgo, etc. Will it be enough with a 1600? He has is pcpartpicker list ready but he currently can't send me the link. I'll edit the post if he gives it to me.

Well the 1600AF is really good given it sells for so cheap. I would recommend a better GPU if he's playing at anything above 60hz. RAM should be 3200mhz if possible. A bronze PSU like a CX550 should be enough, I can't stress how much a good case is necessary, so a P400A or NR600 or TD500 Mesh or 275R Airflow or 4000D airflow are good choices. Any B450 or B550 board will suffice I believe, I tend to pick Aorus boards because Strix is too costly, and MSI doesn't have great service where I live. If you want the best value SSD, the WD Blue NVMe SSD is great, or Crucial's MX500 is good too. Samsung is not very good value, but still excellent quality. If the CPU runs hot, he can get a NH-U12S or Hyper 212 RGB

They are great, I have 3 SSDs, all Samsungs 500 +500+1tb 860 Evos. But they were all costlier than WD and Crucial where I live at least, I don't know the US pricing. For example, the 1TB WD NVMe and 2.5" MX500 cost about $135 here, but the 860 2.5" costs like $165-$170

I see the gap is even bigger. Whatever you buy never buy 860 QVO or any QLC SSD for that matter. I'm not sure but I think the WD I mentioned is NOT a QLC. The 860 Evo is TLC, QVO is QLC

If you want AMD you could use a Ryzen 3 3100 with an A520 board and some 3200mhz. memory with this parts list for about the same cost.

The case is nothing special but the quality is acceptable and allows as much of the budget for the build to be focused on performance and quality parts where it really counts. It's really the only place to cut cost on a low budget build. It includes a front and rear fan so it's ready to use, while many budget cases are lacking fans or only come with one in the rear. It also comes in white with blue LED fans or black with purple or orange LED fans, so you can change it to any of those. Obviously there are better cases available but you'd need to increase the build budget or risk sacrificing quality of other components, which I don't recommend. Newegg has it on sale right now at a good discount.

I put in a healthy amount of rgb in this list, such as the heat sink, MOBO, and the fans. For me, its an eye sore because i dont like cpus under 6 cores. so ye.

The 1600 AF has not been around for a while now, it sold very fast when it was under $100, I bought one and really wish I bought 2. Any you find now are over 200. A good Ryzen CPU now is the R5 2600 which is pretty much the 1600 AF at $50 more but still less than other CPUs in the same class for thread count and speeds.

When this CPU came out, and Covid was just starting, I bought it and built a new PC around it to keep from getting bored LOL Also gave me a bit of fun in getting a second system for myself again since my older main desktop was taken over by my daughter and wife. My son bought an EVGA SuperNova months ago and never used, for like $75 on sale, and I bought a used GTX 1070 for $180, so we avoided the price hikes that happened recently. Just days ago we build another PC for son's girlfriend using the R5 2600 so she has pretty much the same setup but at a higher cost due to the CPU being $130 vs under $100.

Yes, they're made for lower budget builds and most A520 boards will support the new Ryzen CPU's for anyone who wants to upgrade later on. Probably best to check with the board manufacturer website to verify Ryzen 5xxx compatibility before buying one if you want upgrade option.

You won't have a bottleneck with the 1600AF. He must be looking at the CPU usage %. It's not a very good criteria to assess bottleneck. Because if something is running on single core, and that core is doing its best. It'll still show 16% usage on that core for that app because that CPU has 6 cores (100/6)

I don't care about checking bottlenecking, I have what I have, and it is pretty much evenly matched, it runs what I want at more than enough speed and quality for me. I like to spend my time using my computer if it's running not looking for tiny flaws in the build. One of my philosophies with things is that the best way to break something is take a working item and try to improve it for no good reason. Start to overclock things, swap parts, before you know it you burned out your video card and bent pins in your $300 CPU instead of just using the computer.

Bottlenecking is a thing but people take it way too far than they should, they want the system to be so razor edge balanced as to be silly. When you are pouring cereal do you take out weight and mass measurers to ensure that there is a perfect milk to cereal ratio or do you just estimate and get it close? Same thing with computers, good enough is good enough. Of course when I get to the last bit of cereal and there is no milk left, hell yea that's a win!
