I have a Compaq Presario CQ 5814 and would like to upgrade it to a gaming computer. I mostly play games such as Skyrim, Mass Effect, 2K, Dragon Age, etc...
The specs are as follows http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/kb/docDisplay?docId=c02859370&ac.admitted=1412900678202.876444892.199480143

I would like to keep the old Hard Drive as I haven't used much of it at all. And already have the monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse, and OS. So really just looking to use the same case and hard drive and save a few bucks there. Thanks in advance.

Solution
if you're relying on recovery media that came with that computer, bad news- your OS license is tied to the motherboard. And that motherboard is not what you want for a gaming machine. plus CPU is probably soldered onto the motherboard and not upgradeable (not that there are any worthwhile choices anyways) plus the recovery media probably checks for a compaq motherboard and wont' really work with anything else.

The hard drive should still be good. Optical drive is good. supposedly the case is standard ATX, should be just fine for a relatively simple build. power supply is too weak. DDR3-1333 should be OK to use, though there are faster stuff out now. 3GB will at least get you up and running, but you'll probably want more eventually.

I get free Windows 7 download from my University. And yes, definitely want to swap out the motherboard.

Will the above work for my needs?

You're wasting money on 2400mhz ram. You could save money and go with my build and see similar or better gaming performance. Make sure to get a blower cooler if you're using the prebuilt pc case since a blower dissipates heat through the back of the card, rather than the front of it. This means hot air wouldn't be trapped in the poorly ventilated case, and would exit the case directly from the back exhaust of the blower cooled graphics card.
