I have that Samsung 171P running analogue signals. This question has been in my mind for a long time-- What refresh rate should I use, 60Hz or 75Hz for 17inch LCDs running native resolution of 1280X1024 in order to get the BEST picture quality?

Your panel should have no problems displaying at ~70Hz. Though LCDs don't have the tell-tale flicker of a CRT at the lower refresh rates, why settle for less when you can have the higher for no real cost?

Because u'll burn out your monitor. I've seen an LCD get messed up running @ 75Hz. make sure it can allow for that, traditionaly native res is at 60Hz.

My frog asked me for a straw...dunno what happened his ass all over the place 😱

Burn out an LCD? I'll take your word for it. But most video cards, such as nVidia have a display option that can set it so that only viable refresh rates are displayed for your particluar panel. Since I use the Samsung 760vTFT, 75Hz isn't supported but 72Hz is. Thus the 75Hz option isn't even available for me to select.

By burn out I mean it stops working/ things get REALLY screwy. 75Hz was available for instance when I had my TFT7020, but it was meant to be run at 60Hz, and it kinda burned out like that the first time. In answer to nanyangview's question, no, if run @ 60hz it'll be fine, it run at 75Hz and it doesn't like it u will get numerous image issues.

The vast majority of LCD’s run up to 75Hz refresh rates, check the manufactures specifications. Why anyone would want to run above the manufactures recommended spec is another topic that makes no sense to me. If you exceed the monitor’s specifications the units are designed to go into power save mode, I have never seen or heard of a unit burning out, from overdriving the refresh rate.

If the unit fails odds are it is not related to the refresh rate it is running.

First off welcome back:) I'm just saying that on many I've used, 60hz is the optimal/standard refresh rate at native res (although 75Hz is ok at lower than native res). I simply don't want him to run it as you said beyond what it's meant to be run at.

The image quality on my Samsung 171mp (analogue) is noticeably superior when running at the recommended 60hz refresh rate.

Don't fall into the 'higher is better' trap, just because it applies (to an extent) to CRT's.
