Greetings, I am in need of assistance as my computer is no longer showing me a signal

I recently purchased off of ebay ( from trusted computer seller with 100 rating ) a low profile Radeon 6350 graphics card (no install disc), the seller states that it has been tested and works. I installed the card into my machine (HP DC5850), but upon turning the computer on after I placed the card in (taking the vga cable and plugging it into the new port/adapter on the card), all I got was a black screen, as my monitor said no signal. I powered down the machine and made sure the card was in correctly, and it appeared so. I turned on the computer again, and same issue. I made sure the fan was spinning on the card and made sure computer was running, and it all seemed fine, except still no signal from the newly installed card. After another attempt, and fearing something may be wrong, I powered down the system and removed the card completely.
I then reverted to using the VGA port on the mb, but then I also got no signal.

After I installed the new card, I had planned to go to the AMD site and download the software and drivers and then be off and running. Switching back to the vga on the mb, I figured that maybe I should download them first after getting no signal, but now that I can't get a signal at all, I'd say I am in trouble.

I'd really appreciate some tips and ideas as to what to do, but for now, I have just unplugged the machine and left it alone, as I am afraid to further attempt anything. :??:

thing with prebuilts is they use a proprietary bios and it may not have support for that card ?? is that typ of card on your hp models approved up grade list of parts that can be used ??

I do feel the card its self as its size and model and low pro I don't see it being a power issue cause that's mostly the type of card hp would slap in factory ??

I guess you need to test the card in another computer like your buddies to see if it just not the card or some way to test it out ??

of course hp's site seems to be down for maintance so I cant look at things there ?

maybe like replied to here to use the latest bios ...

Solution

But I can't even see a signal using the vga port on the mb when turning it on. Any tips and ideas as to what that can be??? How can I get the signal back from the mb?
Thanks for the help thus far

with that hard to say ?? unless you got monitor or cable issue ? don't know if the board auto switches from onboard to pci-e for card use in the bios or not ??

to me the onboard should be closr to goof proof and fail safe - try the onboard and boot to safe mode should display on that by default

I have managed to find a solution to whatever occurred. I found out, that removing the ram from the board and then adding it back fixes the issue. I removed the new card again, plugged in the vga cable to the vga on the motherboard, removed and added the ram back and booted the computer. I was able to see windows as normal. I again shutdown the computer, added the new card this time, unplugged the vga from the mb and to the new card, booted up the computer and I was seeing everything just fine.
I don't understand it, but it worked. Once I removed the ram and then placed it back, the computer would boot as normal, with and without the new video card.
So it all works now, except it trying to install the wrong drivers from online, but I'll find them from the site and install them myself.
Thanks a bunch for the reply and assistance!

good deal though all that sounds craxy to have to do for a card ??

heres what AMD has as latest for 7-8-10 windows

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/legacy?product=legacy3&os=Windows%207%20-%2064

on the right side of the page theres a ''Helpful Links Previous Drivers and Software '' if you need something older to try as well

wow AMD's support is getting bad and hard to use

anyway for my older 6850 and 7850 cars with windows 7 I still use 13.12 seems to be the most stable for my use and needs over any of the newer drivers I tried

http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/AMDCatalyst13-12WINReleaseNotes.aspx

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/previous/detail?os=Windows%207%20-%2064&rev=13.12

its like AMD just don't give a crap anymore

Thank you for the links. I am having a hard time getting the card to install the proper drivers. Windows was forcing it to be recognized as Radeon 5450, and when I managed to stop it from being detected as such, I downloaded the driver exe for AMD Catalyst but it's just showing up as a generic display device and not the Radeon 6350....I have been trying to figure this out all morning...I was also under the impression it could be a extended monitor card, but it seems it's just a duel monitor that displays the same content on each monitor. Th catalyst control center doesn't even give the option of changing the resolution (I thought it's supposed to). Additionally, I find it odd that, though it may not have an extended monitor function with it's connection, it gives me the option to have to separate desktops on a single monitor -- picking and choosing which to display at a single time.
And here I thought this all would be simple... -_-

Again, thank you for the help!

sounds like a ''gray market '' card thats where they take a lesser card and flash its bios with another better or higher cards bios ant pass it off as that

change the stickers or what ever they can do to pass it off as ????

that's the risk you take dealing with e-bay

heck man even new cards today are don't like that

example

buyer beware .....

newegg has first quality cards like you wanted , cheap?

I'm clearly unsure if this is the case. I just don't know. But I shall investigate further with the links you provided. The drivers from the amd site install the catalyst control center (I dont understand why this versions is limited to other catalyst control centers either released, as they all had more functionality with changing the resolution and adjusting colors), but they don't install the driver for the card, and the only thing I can do to find the drivers (since the download from the site dont do it) is leave the card to be updated by a microsoft update. I'm really puzzled by this whole experience. I understand the card is old, but I just dont understand how and why this is the case, that the download from amd doesn't install the driver and that I have to let windows do it.
With having the card be recognized and updated by the windows update for a 5450 graphics card, it gives me the ability to do the extended monitor, but clearly it's not what it's supposed to be. For now, I'll just work with it. I got the card for the low price and wanting a duel monitor, and so it's giving me that ability. At some point I may really look into it to sort it out, but for now, it's working for it's purpose and I'm content with that.

Again, thank you a bunch for the help and links to help me get this sorted!!!!

I use a 6850 and 13.12 works fully and fine on it ??

like I say it could be also due to being that hp may not support it as I was saying above and in this disclaimer i'll give as well

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked or fixed'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..

you got to know the the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers there only guaranteed to work as is out of the box as you bought it ,..

also these boards do not have to meet atx standards and there pci-e slot power may not do the required 75w needed for most higher end cards and can be limited to say 45 or 60w that is all thats needed with the low end factory oem cards that it may of shipped with

with prebuilts and aftermarket parts plus its used or what ever from e-bay [no telling what you got there to start ] you got a lot going against you I guess ?

its all at own risk and you just hope for the best and that maybe where your at now
