when we buy an upgrade to windows 7 from vista will we be able to uprgade from 32bit to 64bit or would we be required to purchase the entire new os, instead of just the upgrade?

Solution
Buying the upgrade version of Windows 7 allows you to legitimately install and activate the 64-bit version of Windows 7 even if your previous version was Vista 32-bit.

BUT in terms of the actual install procedure, an "in-place" upgrade of 32-bit to 64-bit is not supported - you'll have to install a fresh copy of Windows 7 and then migrate your accounts and reinstall your applications.

You will be able to upgrade from say vista professional 32 to windows 7 professional 64. Stick with the upgrade. In fact the upgrade has more installation options than the full version.
